Book Description

17 April 2008
Running to Learn tells the compelling story of Julia, an international marathon runner her struggle to reach peak performance, her battle with an eating disorder and the challenges of her personal relationships. Through the many highs and lows of her life, Julia discovers the skills necessary to perform at top level and learns how to manage herself effectively in times of difficulty or triumph. Written with openness, that can at times be startling, everyone who reads this book will identify with it on some level a controlling relationship, a fear of abandonment or a desire to please. Julia reflects not just on a personal level but also from the perspective of a highly experienced therapist and lifecoach, giving the reader an insight into not just Julia's world but also to many issues which effect us all day to day. Each of the 26.2 chapters begin with Julia's ruminations on life's journey, and she has a unique ability to see how all our journeys fit within the bigger picture. Running to Learn describes Julia's unique approach to life, marrying the story of her running career with the wisdom she has gleaned from her therapy and coaching, this book shows you how you can take control of your own hopes, fears and dreams and reach a place where you are happy with who you are.

5.0 out of 5 stars REAL - ZEAL - HEAL 4 Jun 2008
Format:Paperback
This book is simply amazing. The author has completely exposed a life's journey from head to toe of her core being. I firmly believe that this book has the power to empower every human being that decides to be true to oneself and chooses to look within to find out who they `Really' are? As opposed to whom they `Think' they are, or 'Portraying' to be via the consistent pressures of daily life under the socially conditioned society that we live in. The positive affect that this book has had on me is absolutely liberating to say the least. I particularly related to each and every word and sentence from each opening chapter. Those 26 paragraphs at the start of each chapter were refreshingly `REAL' and I totally related to each and every inspirational word that expressed how ALL of us really feel inside within ourselves, searching for inner peace, fulfilment, happiness, contentment, joy, love, purpose and self worth.

To me, this book is a real turning point and I passionately believe the soulful emotions oozing out of the author, therapeutically going through the motions of her life's journey, shadowed by her lucrative purpose as a top long distance runner and to find what we are all looking for in this sometimes illusive and fickle world; is absolutely enlightening. Through the window of Julia's Soul, I could clearly see the inner beauty, integrity, sincerity, passion, drive, pain, suffering, giving and receiving that was imminent in her journey of life so far - `Destiny'. Julia Armstrong has created a very powerful inspirational tool for any human being that wishes to find there true self, and live and breathe by their inner values and beliefs system. This book is the ultimate X-RAY vision of ones' core being, that encourages righteousness, truth, commitment, focus, and something deep within us to simply just be you.

If I may sum up this book in three words, REAL, ZEAL, HEAL.

5.0 out of 5 stars A little direction alongside a cracking read 23 April 2008
Format:Paperback
The story of Julia's life and running career makes for a great read, and the insights throughout are relevant, if not essential, for anyone and everyone!
Her character is consistently warm, generous and engaging, even as she hits setback after setback, falters, learns from her mistakes and moves on - which is the real marathon effort within the book's 26.2 chapters.
A great book for anyone looking for a little direction alongside a cracking read.

5.0 out of 5 stars What an inspiring read 19 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback
I met Julia in 2010 as she was helping me in my goal to run 50 marathons in 56 days across Europe. I found her to be a great Friend and mentor. She gave me a copy of her book and WOW! It is very humbling to read a story about someone who speaks so honestly about problems and issues which many people will be able to relate to. A great read!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, intense and intimate autobiography... 14 Jun 2011
By Michael Johnson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It wasn't too long ago that I was browsing iTunes for podcasts on running. I subscribed to Julia's podcast, "Running to Learn", thinking that it was going to be geared toward runners. It was indeed that but it turned out to be a lot more. Not only were there episodes about running and runners, but there were also a lot of episodes devoted to spiritual, psychological and relationship topics as well. In one of the episodes, I found out that she had written a book. I quickly hopped on Amazon and was pleased to find that it was available for the Kindle.

"Running to Learn" is Julia very honest autobiography...equal parts running memoir, family memoir, work memoir and relationship memoir. She hides nothing and leaves nothing behind. She has poured her heart and soul into this book. It is touching, moving and exhilarating at the same time.

Her book is broken up into 26.2 chapters (one for each mile of the Marathon) and each chapter starts with a metaphysical comment on different aspects of life. Julia then goes on to describe her life experiences in very intimate (but never sordid) detail. Everything from her successes and failures at training and racing, her family life growing up, her relationships, her marriages and her battles with food addiction. She also describes her struggles with, and ultimate acceptance of, her healing talents.

At times, I felt like I was reading my own story which may account for the reason I was drawn to Julia's book and the feelings I had while reading it....Synchronicity strikes again...
