Book Description

30 Dec 2008 Arcane Society Novels (Book 5)

Ex-cop Luther Malone and quirky librarian Grace Renquist are a strange partnership. Grace has been hired as an aura-reading consultant in the quest for a murder suspect, but has zero field experience. Her bodyguard, Luther, walks with a cane and isn't good with a gun! So the last thing they expect is for romantic sparks to fly between them at their hotel in Maui, where they're posing as honeymooners.

However, when rogue operatives for an underground group pour into the luxury resort their attraction must be suppressed quickly. Grace recognises the dark spikes in their auras and understands how dangerous these people can be. While the pair's employers scramble to get them backup, Luther and Grace have to think on their feet but the criminals in their midst aren't just high-level sensitives - they've enhanced their talent with a potent and unpredictable drug. And as Grace knows all too well, if you don't control your powers, your powers will control you...

5.0 out of 5 stars Arcane Society, Book Five 24 Mar 2009

She goes by the name of Grace Renquist. She has been running from her past for over a year. With her new identity Grace lives in Eclipse Bay, Oregon. She even managed to pass the background check when she applied for a job with J&J. From her computer in Eclipse Bay, Grace works as a reference librarian in the Society's Bureau of Genealogy. She specializes in the familial patterns of genetically inherited psychic traits. Her psychic talent is Aura Profiling. She can read more in a target's aura than anyone else. So it is no wonder that Fallon Jones, head of the West Coast office of J&J, chooses Grace for a simple ID job. All Grace has to do is check out Eubank's aura to see if he murdered someone recently. Eubank is en route to Hawaii. Luckily, Fallon already knows of someone who resides on Hawaii to partner Grace.

Former Homicide Detective Luther Malone has the high-level talent of Aura Manipulation. Financially, Luther is broke and accepts the J&J job as bodyguard for Grace. Good money for simply sitting in a lavish hotel while a librarian peeks at Eubank's aura. But Luther had no idea the librarian would be so young or easy on his eyes. The reading of Eubank is a cinch. Problem is that close to a dozen Nightshade operatives are gathering at the hotel at the same time. Something big seems to be happening. Luther begins a bit of investigating while Grace remains in the background. After all, she has zero field experience. Unfortunately, Grace notices someone about to murder one of the hotel's staff with a psychic voice. By saving the employee, Grace makes herself the target of a psychopathic opera singer who is determined to locate the librarian and give her personal performance.

***** The story takes place in the present. Though Grace and Luther are the primary characters, a few characters from previous titles are mentioned or make cameo appearances. In my opinion, this is the best story in the series thus far. With every installment of this series, the people get more interesting and the danger escalates. Breathtaking! *****

4.0 out of 5 stars Good fun 28 Feb 2010

OK this is the fifth novel in the Arcane series by Jane Ann Krentz and its going to be something that you'll have to have read the whole lot for or just end up missing the whole point of the series. As a newbie, its going to be pretty tough to dive in at the deep end and have a clear understanding of where you are and you'll miss a number of the references within to previous outings for some of the characters within.

It is well written, the plot is fairly crisp and the characters keep the reader interested with this title fulfilling the potential of the key ingredients that have won the author fans the world over including fully developing the romantic angle within this title. Add to this a pretty slick story arc and its something that will please a number of readers and potentially win her a few more.

This Archane Society series comprises some of JAK's best writing ever. The storylines are great, obviously with the same overall theme running through, but they are distinct whole stories so you don't lose anything by not having read the other books. The characters in this book are particularly engaging and the chemistry between the two leads is sizzling. I would thoroughly recommend this book. Can't wait for the next one in the series to come out.
