An excellent publication. This is my most favoured book on Runic divination in my 7 book collection. Edred Thorsson has provided clear interpretation tables for each rune of the Elder FUThARK. Also given are clearly instructed methods of casting and drawing, with alternative ways on which to draw lots.

All together a fantastic book. If you have already made your own rune set (highly recommended that you do), then this is 'THE' book with which to divine with!

A wonderful resource for anyone desiring to learn more about runes and divination. It is an excellent starting point for beginners and not only that but provides detailed information for the advanced runecaster as well. It is written well and informatively and doesn't have the dry prose that some authors seem to pick up when they are writing. All in all, it is a good read and a worthy book to dip into when searching for a particular reference.

Well worth it!

This book is a short but packed primer on runic divination. The author has a good academic pedigree and values authenticity and historical accuracy. There are sections on history, meanings and methods of runecasting. The size of the book (quite slim) attests to the author's ability to keep it punchy and clear. Five stars for quality and density of information.

I also want to record quite a personal response to the book (minus one star). I hope this is relevant to others who are looking for a divinatory system, which is quite a personal and aesthetic business. You certainly can't accuse this author of fluffy-bunny new ageism, with his pedigree and his academic creds. However, my feeling is that if i met the man, I imagine I would find his knowledge impressive but I'm not sure that I'd actually like him. I have been brooding over a section where he writes about a feminine rune meaning and he dashes off the phrase - the rune may refer to "a mother or a whore". Of course this is just a couple of words, but it crystallises a slight air of (to me) coldness and abstraction that are present in some sections of the book. And which make me think - i'd perhaps rather read a fluffy-bunny new ager with their heart in the right place. He occasionally hits moments of real abstraction in his rune meanings where i feel he'd be better off with some more vivid images or correspondences. And there are the periodic exhortations about odianism, which leave me cold. You'll never doubt that the book was written by a bloke. Nothing wrong with that, of course.

So in summary - impressive knowledge, commendably brief and covers a lot of ground. Feel free to take my personal response with a pinch of salt. I haven't yet read any alternatives, so I can't recommend other options.
