Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Running might not be having a good time but be honest--who can say they have never looked at one of those super-fit types as they breeze around the park on sunny mornings, looking fresh as daisies in their teensy weensy vests and shorts and wondered "how on earth" (not to mention "why on earth") they do it?

The truth is, running is not for everyone--as anyone with even a minor knee injury or a sore back will testify--but if you decide that it might just be the right form of exercise for you then you can remain smug in the knowledge that you have chosen the one that burns the most calories in the shortest time, tightens up legs, bums and tums faster than any weight's regime, and gives your heart the best workout it can get.

Dave Kuehls, with an impressive fitness writing CV tucked under his belt, including stints with Sport's Illustrated, Men's Health, GQ and Runner's World, certainly evangelises about all these points in Run Away From Fat: a book designed to gradually build running time over a period of 90 days until eventually you are getting a 40-minute run every day and leaving the weight well and truly behind.

It is simple to follow: the programme is designed to be dealt with one day at a time, so the reader is encouraged not to skip pages but to simply follow the daily instructions and then complete the log at the end of each chapter. Every day you run a little further, learn a little more about what shoes to wear, what clothes to run in and, later, what to eat to maintain the inevitable weight loss and to add fuel to a body that, within 90 days, should be superfit.

Be warned: if you loath the thought of strict regimes, have any kind of injury that could be exacerbated by running, or simply prefer a gentler form of exercise then you should certainly steer clear of Run Away From Fat.

However, 90 days may seem like a life time but in terms of changing your life around it is a very short time indeed, and Run Away From Fatcertainly aims to do just that. So, if running is the route for you, then Kuehls' words of wisdom could well make all the difference. --Susan Harrison

3.0 out of 5 stars Such a simple idea-but so effective, 28 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This programme takes you from absolute beginner to 40-minute jogger in 90 easy-to-follow daily stages. I always thought I was incapable of running for more than two minutes: six weeks into Kuehls' book, I'm doing 30 with ease. For this, the author deserves five stars, despite the cheesiness of the testimonials he includes. However, I'm dropping it down to three, because, although he suggests that you read the book a day at a time, the answers to such burning questions as 'how do I warm up?' 'should I be stretching?' and 'what do I eat?' would surely be best included in an introductory chapter and not spread throughout the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great place to *start*, 11 Sep 2001

Other reviews seem to point to the books weaknesses in comparison to other more "rounded" pieces. The point behind this book is to take the eternal couch potato in all of us and provide a route to fitness that doesn't feel like such a painful grind. While certain key elements are late on (e.g. Stretching etc) the index is there for just such a purpose - go find it!

I'm now on day 70 and have noticed a _vast_ improvement in both my physique and fitness levels. The daily log provides a good impetus to get you going back every day. You too can begin feeling smug in the knowledge that this running lark won't beat you!

If you're a beginner, have no knowledge, but have an inkling that you'd like the easy way to get fit through exercise; this is the book for you!

1.0 out of 5 stars A badly structured way to approach running, 29 April 2001
By A Customer
This is not a good book. Kuehls gives 90 days worth of instruction interspersed with rather patronising little tales (Meet Todd. Todd is a...). There is no structure to the training, stretching is left to day 46 which is a bit late! Shoe choice is day 4, presumably one has been running in bare feet during days 1 - 3. Dehydration is on day 16. There is no health check caution for over 40s. I think the author threw this miserable little tome together in an afternoon. Don't buy, there are far better books around (try The Runners Handbook by Bob Glover)

A good book in so much as you have to commit to paper your efforts out on the road/park/track/field/beach. Read more
