Book Description

24 July 2006

Jalaluddin Rumi, the great Sufi poet and mystic born in 1204, believed that if we surrender ourselves to the power of love, it is possible to live in a state of infinite bliss. This collection features poems from the Divan to "Shams-e Tabriz", odes to the inspirational and mysterious figure who changed Rumi's life and led him to spiritual enlightenment; from the Ruba'iyat, which are brief lyric pieces of a set form; and from the Mathnavi-e Na'navi, the Poem of Inner Meanings, which, through its esoteric teachings, offers moral and spiritual knowledge. Raficq Abdulla captures the energy and power of the original. Each page is illustrated with miniatures and decorations from Islamic manuscripts, including ancient Mathnavis.

More About the Author

I am a lawyer by day and a writer by night which is the best time to dream, reflect and think. As you will see from Author Central, I have written interpretations of the poems of the 13th century mystics, Rumi and Attar. I write poetry all the time. My inspirations are Rilke, Lorca, Auden, Eliot, Pound, Hughes, Sappho and many other poets. I have published essays on Art (Ruskin), Spirituality and Poetry. When I am not writing, I am hanging about in London which is one of the greatest, most diverse cities in the world. It buzzes with galleries, theatres, movies and good places to meet people and start conversations with friends and strangers. My first love is Music - classical, jazz and world music.

A delightful book, beautifully illustrated with old Persian designs, these meditative words are a complete balm. Rumi is less well-known in England than Omar Kayyam but they bear similarities and will appeal to a similar market.
