5.0 out of 5 stars Has to be heard - over and over and over ... 10 April 2002
Format:Audio CD
Heard this album at a friend's when it was first released but didn't really take it in. Then borrowed it and got the opportunity to see Thea live and liked it so much I bought the CD and have listened to it almost continuously since! It's superb - folk with attitude!
She describes herself as being very serious and miserable (musically) but some of the tracks like "This Girl Is Taking Bets" and "Saviours And All" are more upbeat even if the content can be quite serious at times. "Holding Your Hand" is beautifully haunting. Her lyrics belie her years and she writes and sings with emotion.
If you like female singer/songwriters, well produced sound and a great voice then I'd recommend you give this a listen. Definitely a good driving CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it now!!! 7 Nov 2001
Format:Audio CD
thea gilmore's second album, 'rules for jokers' confirms her cult status as a truly talented and uniquely british singer, songwriter and musician. Her first album 'the lipstick conspiracies' rarely leaves my autochanger, and was an unexpected discovery. Originally purchased because it was featured on the naim label who are renowned for the quality of their recordings. Best described as adult contemporary folk/rock, this new album slows down the pace, but with the same strong lyrics, and gilmore's smooth effortless voice flowing over a rhythmically played accoustic guitar- fantastic. It's dificult to pick favourite tracks as they are all so good, but two that stand out are track 5 'st lukes summer' and track 13 'inverigo.' The quality of the recording is excellent too. When will her next album be out?

5.0 out of 5 stars a real masterpiece 19 Sep 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
this is such a brilliant album by thea that i felt compelled to write a review and spread the word! thea is a very down to earth person and does not mince her words. her songs are about real life and real life topics, nothing is out of bounds for thea. she is a brilliant singer/songwriter and musician and will definately go the distance.she is only 21,has her own record label and now this 3rd album "rules for jokers" is a masterpiece. when her debut "burning dorothy"came out everyone compared her to alanis morrisette, however she is much more unique.as she herself says on "take me home"she is older, braver and wiser. every track is a winner and i can not praise this album enough.i really hope thea gets the recognition she deserves.watch this space! better still buy the album and enjoy!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth a listen 5 May 2006
Format:Audio CD
All too easily artists susch as Thea Gilmore are overlooked due to their lack of commercial success. This album is everything chart music is not, it sounds crafted - by a real musician, it varies the pace, yet every song is strong and worth a listen adding to the whole. In short this is an album to enjoy and savour rather than a single to enjoy and throw away. Quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb album 29 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I have attempted to play this album to death, but it still sounds good. A mellowing (slightly!) from the aggression of the first two albums, but the lyrics remain spiky and original, with memorable music; not a duff track on the album. She has matured (at the advanced age of 22...) into the best British female singer/songwriter by far, on this evidence.
