3.0 out of 5 stars Another nicely-written tale from Ryan, but nothing astonishing, 21 Dec 2008
Sara Ryan follows up Empress of the World with this sequel of sorts, told from the point of view of the unusually-named Battle, the love interest of the narrator in the first novel. Fans of the first book who liked Nicola's character should be warned that she is absent from this novel. In addition, the Battle character is mostly unrecognisable from the one seen in "Empress of the World"; as I read this book, I couldn't help thinking that Ryan might have been better off creating a whole new character for this story.

Curious sequel status aside, "The Rules for Hearts" begins well and througout, Ryan has a real feel for the misplaced world-weariness of teenagers. However, somewhere along the line, the book's early momentum is lost. There is little reason to care about Battle's brother, Nick, with whom she is unduly preoccupied, and a long digression on an amateur production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is something of a blind alley.

On the other hand, I once again enjoyed Ryan's pragmatic depiction of young lesbian love (and lust), which manages to be thoughtful and realistic and avoids the sappiness of many teenage romance novels. Ryan is skillful in showing the complications of Battle's romantic entanglements and we see how Battle's gradual coming to terms with her sexuality does not mean she has found all of life's answers.

Ryan's writing in this novel shows improvement on her debut and I know I will really enjoy this writer once she begins to dig a little deeper into her characters and life's truths and disappointments.
