Product Description

Product Description

The book should be helpful to anyone who wants to improve their spelling of English in a short time, be they native or foreign learners. Native speakers of English are taught English spelling rules and the spellings of over 3000 common words which disobey them in the course of their compulsory schooling, which generally lasts about 11 years. Yet this and even several more years spent in higher education leaves many of them still making numerous spelling errors, and with little idea of how to improve quickly or effectively. This book can help them because it shows exactly what learning to spell English involves. It lists all English spelling patterns and the words which disobey them. It highlights the spellings which cause the biggest difficulties for all learners and shows why they do so. It also enables individuals to identify what most needs their particular attention. The aim of this book is to help poor spellers to improve as quickly as possible. Anyone looking for a more detailed explanation of why learning to read and spell English is relatively slow and difficult should read Masha Bell's 'Understanding English Spelling', published by Pegasus in 2004.

About the Author

Masha Bell began to learn English as her third language at 14 and soon realised that its spelling was exceptionally difficult. It involved much more memorisation of unpredictable spellings than the writing systems of her native Lithuanian and school Russian, or those of German, French and Spanish which she studied later. When she eventually ended up teaching English in England, she discovered that English spelling caused many problems for native speakers of the language too. Since her premature, health-necessitated retirement from teaching in 1995 she has been investigating and explaining English spelling and reading problems and producing materials for helping people to cope with them.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Brave Attempt to Impose Order on Chaos, 29 Aug 2010
This review is from: Rules and Exceptions of English Spelling (Paperback)
This little book attempts to explain English spelling rules, traditions, commonalities and the many exceptions. It's sensibly organised but the alphabetical approach doesn't adapt easily to the 44 phonemes. I bought it to help me to make revision notebooks for dyslexic students. Study it before you use it for reference. (I made my own page reference.) To help dyslexic readers it needs to be a larger format and much more clearly arranged on the page.
Useful for working out your own spelling curriculum and the best (simplest and most comprehensive) I've found yet.
Trainee teachers, get it and use it.
GOOD VALUE.
