Format:DVD
Film fans may already recognise Bret Easton Ellis as the man behind American Psycho. People expecting more of the same may find this film a little more restrained than his previous adaption but this doesn't reduce the impact of the film. Basically, it follows the various relationships and activities of several students on a college campus. Before you say "Oh no, not another American Pie", this film's humour is much darker and subtler in tone. The direction of the film is unusual as well, rather than just following a linear path, it jumps backwards and forwards, allowing you to see each characters (often very different) perspective on the action. Probably not the sort of film for anyone who wants a good post night-out comedy but an excellent drama with a black humour to it.

This is such a great film, realistic, moving, gritty, quirky, tragic, funny and perfect execution by director Roger Avery. The reverse sequence is pure class and must have taken some putting together as is the 'holiday' sequence, not going to give too much away but this film is well worth watching again and again and again, 8.5 out of 10. NOTE: DO NOT buy the UK DVD as it's cut - the US Region 1 and all other European versions are intact.

A Quirky Favourite... 29 Sep 2010
Format:Blu-ray
First of all I just want to say I'm not obsessed about this movie but I saw it at the cinema originally, then purchased it on dvd. Now that I've got Blu-Ray thought it only appropriate to buy it on this format too...er, ok so maybe I'm a little obsessed, but not for the storyline (which is pants and either quite incomprehensible or too simplistic for words).

The story revolves around the self-obsessed, shallow, well off co-eds in an arts college (Camden), and the film revolves around their unrequited loves and cravings for drugs, sex and partying (but not told in a dumb 'frat-house' way). Seems to me Brett Easton-Ellis (American Psycho) doesn't write about any other kind of person, alas. I've always wondered why the charismatic James Van Der Beek hasn't been given better roles, but he has been allowed to shine here. I've also got a major crush on Shannyn Sossamon, one of the films two main characters - so that helps!! Be warned, however, this film is not for those with weak stomachs as there's scenes of puke, rape (my opinion), and suicide. Ever wonder whatever happened to that kid from 'The Wonder Years'? You'll find out here!!

The reason this film works overall(and the reason for my obsession) is the cinematography - It's brilliant!! From the outset with the reverse trick photography to now often-copied whirlwind euro-trip, and the snowflake scene at the end this film film certainly captures the imagination. The soundtrack is a good mixture of dance and classic.

The blu-ray is a good quality transfer (I've seen better), but it's a reasonable upgrade. Sound quality's great. I'm not disappointed to have this - it's certainly a step up from DVD.

This film was largely overlooked at the box office, but I suggest you give it a go if you want something different from the usual college campus/sorority movie. Due to it's lack of success you'll find it heavily-discounted just about everywhere, so enjoy!

Underrated guilty pleasure
Roger Avery approaches the material with a funny, light, high energy touch, not
asking us to take Brett Easton Ellis's nihilism too seriously. Read more

Very decent Blu-ray picture quality
This Blu-ray has been a pleasant surprise to me. Picture (1080p/AVC MPEG-4) quality is very good and not plagued by any digital tinkering to speak of. Read more

This was a weird one. I like the odd ones though and especially when it concerns lots of different people and how their lives intertwine. Really cool storyline. Read more
