Book Description

Rula Lenska’s is an extraordinary life. Born in Britain to Polish aristocrats, refugees from the Nazis and then the Soviets, Rula found fame in the 1970s as ‘Q’ in the TV series Rock Follies. Shortly afterwards, she accidentally conquered America with the infamous VO5 hair advert, prompting Johnny Carson to ask ‘Who the hell is Rula Lenska?’ The world soon found out exactly who she was, as her career went on a rollercoaster ride through classic British television series such as Minder, To the Manor Born, The Detectives, Doctor Who, Casualty, Space: 1999 and, of course, Coronation Street. This came alongside a distinguished stage career, with stellar performances in The Vagina Monologues and Calendar Girls. But her success has often been tempered with heartache. The fanfare surrounding her celebrity marriage to Dennis Waterman quickly faded amid accusations of alcoholism and spousal abuse. And then there was her surreal stint on Celebrity Big Brother, which she calls ‘sixteen days of madness’… Now older and wiser, and elevated to the status of national treasure, Rula Lenska is ready to share her unbelievable story in full. And while we’ve all watched her life from the outside, no one has heard or seen Rula like this – unabashed, honest and thrilling.

Review

The title of Rula Lenska's autobiography...says it all really, an enjoyable and revealing canter through a wide-ranging career, and a less successful celebrity marriage to Dennis Warterman, not to mention a surreal appearance on Celebrity Big Brother. --Choice Magazine

There are casualties of an uncompromising life, as admitted in this candid and entertaining memoir. --The Good Book Guide

My Colourful Life [is] fitting for a memoirs that covers the journey from her Polish aristocrat parents escape from the Nazis to starring on stage and screen…not to mention her tempestuous marriage to Dennis Waterman, US fame and Celebrity Big Brother. --The Basingstoke Post

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging, sensitive & surprising! 29 Sept. 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I'm not a great fan of biographies but I was drawn to Rula's book. Her history, her attitude to life and frankness make this a smooth and engaging read! Here is an intelligent and bold woman who, rather than writing a kiss and tell choses to tell a story woven with snippets of a very full life. In my opinion, even prior to reading this insight (in one sitting), Ms Lenska is a hugely underrated actress and personality. She is in a 'list' of her own!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best nor the worst autobiog 2 Dec. 2014
By Wingate
Format:Hardcover
I had previously read Dennis Waterman's autobiog which gave graphic details of the breakup of the marriage. Here the author is rather less forthcoming. Now I don't have a problem with that. However she doesn't seem to recognise her share of blame in the breakdown of the marriage. She had an affair with Waterman whilst they were both still married. So she must have had an inkling as to what was going to happen after she married him. They were an ill suited pair. She expected Waterman to be faithful, which was never going to happen. He expected her to be there for him whenever he got home drunk or sober.Little surprise that the marriage broke down.Little consideration for how it must have affected all of the children. The rest of the book is of no particular interest unless you are a fan of Lenska.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bit of a let down 27 Dec. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I have always been a.fan of Rula Lenska a very attractive vivacious lady.I now see her in a different light, so full of herself big headed in fact. When things went wrong it was always somebody else's fault she never did anything wrong. Very disappointing I thought, a me myself and I person.

Entertaining and an easy read but not memorable as it has not a lot of substance. I expected more from this book.
