Tim Fountain knows more about sex than most people. His show, Sex Addict, was the target of widespread and vociferous critical media attention and led him to be labelled a pervert and a freak by much of the mainstream press. This, understandably, raised a few questions in his mind. Was his sex life really so different to the rest of Britain? Or was he just being rather more vocal about what he was up to? To find out, Tim has travelled around the country, starting in Bradford at the site of his first 14-year-old fumble, to take the sexual temperature of our age. Visiting doll-fetishists and animal-fanciers, dogging fans and spanking enthusiasts, swingers' hotels and glory holes, Tim investigates our current attitudes to sex, peeping behind closed doors and exploring the private lives of Britons in an attempt to discover just what is going on beneath our stiff upper lips.

'Alan Bennett with his pants down - brilliantly funny' (Julie Burchill )

"Fountain makes dirty Britain 2008 sound disarmingly funny, because he's disarmingly funny... he's got a brilliant ear for a certain kind of dialogue" (Peter York INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY )

"Fountain is a funny man. He's got a playwright's ear for speech so there are plenty of laughs in the book" (Claire Black SCOTSMAN MAGAZINE )

"This is a further journey for this sexual... erm... athlete as he looks to see if he, and Britain, are depraved.." (BENT )

"This very funny book will certainly broaden your mind" (Gaydarnation.com )

5.0 out of 5 stars Deliciously unexpected 25 Jun 2008
Format:Paperback
What a treat! I was actually bought this book as a joke present but was delighted to discover that this was not a sleazy look at british deviants but in fact a thrilling journey around the UK that just happens to be a bit sexy. it is full of unexpected people and places but it is a much cheekier- "kiss me quick" britain than i was expecting . what Fountain does best is talk about himself, which is rather a good job as the book acts as both guide and autobiography. he is a likable author though sometimes a little shocking. what is nice, however, is that he too is shocked by some of the people he comes across and some of the locations he comes across them. all in all i thoroughly enjoyed the book and will continue to recommend it-even to my most prudish friends.

4.0 out of 5 stars Naughty but nice 19 Nov 2012

I really enjoyed this. A Bill Bryson type romp around the landscape... of British sex. Laughed out loud at the Furries , liked the style, and enjoyed the hidden depths too. A bargain read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rude Britannia 24 July 2008
Format:Paperback
I bought the book as holiday reading material and it proved perfect for the job. Not at all sleazy but a great account of a very funny, interesting and suprising journey around Britain. Mr Fountain clearly enjoyed the research and writes about it with a great sense of humour. My girlfriend tutted when she read the back cover but then read the book herself and thoroughly enjoyed it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting
The author is gay though not 100%. The book is about him travelling around Britain visiting various places of ill repute. Told in quite a jokey style and worth a read. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious but does need a rehaul..
I'm giving this four stars, because as much as this book made me laugh, it's missing a lot of the varied fetishes out there in the British Isles, so there's a lot missing in my... Read more
