Have you ever tried to imagine how big the pressure on an artist must be if he/she/they deliver a brilliant debut album and people expect them to top themselves on the sophomore effort? Just ask Tek and Steele, who came out with the classic "Dah Shinin" under the name of Smif-N-Wessun, and who went on to change their name to Cocoa Brovaz due to legal troubles; all eyes were on them when it was official that they would release a follow-up. Let's not beat about the bush: "Rude Awakening" is quite different from "Dah Shinin" in terms of soundscape, but the verbal strength of Tek and Steele remains intact; they still spit their Brooklynite tales with the same ease and flawless flow they had in 1994-5. And although you might miss Da Beatminerz' touch on the production side of things, the mostly mellow and heavily instrumentated beats make up for a good listening while smoking the green, but there are also dirty hardcore bangers on there, like the Raekwon-assisted "Black Trump" and "Spanish Harlem". Put it like this: if you are a Smif-N-Wessun fan, you might feel a bit sorry for the missing good old typical Boot Camp Clik sound, but if you're a new-jack, meet the Cocoa Brovaz. In both cases, it is worth checking out the album.

buy this album, its heavy with appearences from heltah skeltah, and reakwon. This defantely needs to be in your CD collection.
