Product Description

Product Description

Pickwick is proud to release eleven of the most famous Gilbert & Sullivan operas recorded by the world famous D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. Whilst the original operas were performed at the Savoy Theatre in London towards the end of the 19th century, it was invariably not until the 1920s that the company began recording. It was the following decade that saw the most notable recordings undertaken, a period when Martyn Green was the company's principal comedian between 1934 and 1951 with a gap between the Second World War. There are ten double CD packages - the only missing operas are Thespis (which was performed but never published and is therefore lost), Utopia Limited and The Grand Duke, with the latter two relative failures compared with earlier successes and therefore not recorded as often as the greater works. By way of a bonus, however, Trial By Jury, a one-act opera that marked the arrival of Gilbert & Sullivan, has been included in this collection. The cover to each of the CD s is based on the original programme issued in the 19th century. Inside the four page booklet is a brief synopsis of each work together with the full cast list. These include Martyn Green, Leonard Osborn, Richard Watson, Radley Flynn, Darrell Fancourt and Margaret Mitchell.

3.0 out of 5 stars Caution advised 26 May 2012

This is a great buy if you are after an authentic performance that can trace its antecedents back to the first staged performances.

But you need to be fully aware that this is an old recording that has been probably recorded directly off some 78s (instead of being digitally remastered). Regretfully the quality is poor and makes it difficult to listen to. When a soloist hits a high note, you can the sound breaking up. There is a discernible background noise.

If you do buy this, you also need to know that the second track on the 1st disc for some odd reason replays the material from earlier in the act.

But then, it is very affordable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ruddigore CD 19 Nov 2013

Ruddigore CD was excellent. Minor criticism is the scratches from the original recording can be heard.
Delivery prompt and good value for money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good English set to Music 30 Aug 2013

Gilbert and Sullivan is for many an acquired taste however Ruddigore does offer an insight into the persona of happier times gone by. The music, lyrics and diction are very good and the only thing that detracts from the listening experience is the poor soundtrack.
