From the author of the Amazon UK Top 5 Bestselling Novel The Dress...
Ever wondered what would happen if you were to just step out of your life for a while? What do you do when your life just doesn't feel like the right fit anymore?

Elena has a career, a husband and a house in London. Everything that you're supposed to want. So why doesn't it feel like enough?

Meanwhile, the ruby slippers are waiting - and they fit her perfectly.

Where might they take her? And will she follow her yellow brick road?

This haunting urban fairy tale traces one woman's journey through a mysterious London landscape and a cast of strange characters, each with something to show her about herself. Is Elena dreaming or is this really happening?

At around 16,000 words, Ruby Slippers can be read in one sitting... or savoured slowly.

'Once I put it down I couldn't stop thinking about it...'

'If you like stories that have a deep, dream-like quality to them then you'll love this one...'

Recommended for wearers of red shoes everywhere.

Completely Absorbing 26 Oct 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
A truly beautifully written story. I downloaded this story on my iphone while I was on the bus, and swiftly became so absorbed that I nearly missed my stop!

The Ruby Slippers tells the tale of a young woman who walks out of one life and into another, tapping into something I think we all find ourselves contemplating at some point in our lives. Sophie Nicholls' writing is deeply evocative - she has a clear love of language which comes through in the way she creates a whole world from her heroine's perspective.

An absolute must-read!

Ruby Slippers is a beautifully crafted novella which I (unintentionally) read in one sitting last night but am already looking forward to re-reading and savouring for years to come. If you like stories that have a deep, dream-like quality to them then you'll love this one which made me feel like I was being handed a different piece of thread with each new chapter. The book manages to weave those threads into a thoroughly bewitching, occasionally disorienting, sometimes gritty, fairy tale that was long enough to be a satisfying read but short enough to leave me hungry for more. It reminded me of the ethereal narrative of Italo Calvino's Italo Calvino's 'Invisible Cities' (Vintage Classics) book where the words look solid enough from a distance but then swirl around you like the morning mist if you try to grasp too tightly at them. Hopefully I won't have too long to wait before Sophie's full-length book is published, I'll definitely be first in line to buy it if it has the same thoughful poetic quality to it.

Haunting 12 Aug 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a haunting, timeless yet modern story that stays with you long after you have read it. The form of the novella - short paragraphs with large spaces between - somehow enhances the content, particularly the sense of disjunction that the main character is feeling.

I too read Ruby Slippers in one sitting, on a train journey. I look forward to more journeys with Sophie Nicholls.

Ruby Slippers.
I really did expect more from this book but unfortunately it was not my type of read at all. But that's just my opinion.

A revelation.
I loved this book, escapism was my interpretation. Sanity can be pushed very slowly over a period of time and a reflex action then has to come into play. Read more

interesting but unusual
This book was quite different to the ones I usually read but also quite gripping. The "inside story" of a breakdown was a compelling read.

Maybe a little too cleverly written for me
This was a surprise to me, having read and really enjoyed The Dress written by Sophie Nicholls. Ruby Slippers is written, for me, in a 'too clever by half' style. Read more

I suppose, however hard you try, you can never really get inside another persons experiences. Its like trying to make out the outline of their body under their clothes. Its like listening for their shadow, the words they dont say, the things they never speak about. "e;
