From the author of the Amazon UK Top 5 Bestselling Novel The Dress...
Ever wondered what would happen if you were to just step out of your life for a while? What do you do when your life just doesn't feel like the right fit anymore?

Elena has a career, a husband and a house in London. Everything that you're supposed to want. So why doesn't it feel like enough?

Meanwhile, the ruby slippers are waiting - and they fit her perfectly.

Where might they take her? And will she follow her yellow brick road?

This haunting urban fairy tale traces one woman's journey through a mysterious London landscape and a cast of strange characters, each with something to show her about herself. Is Elena dreaming or is this really happening?

At around 16,000 words, Ruby Slippers can be read in one sitting... or savoured slowly.

'Once I put it down I couldn't stop thinking about it...'

'If you like stories that have a deep, dream-like quality to them then you'll love this one...'

Recommended for wearers of red shoes everywhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars An un-put-downable poetic yarn 28 July 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Ruby Slippers is a beautifully crafted novella which I (unintentionally) read in one sitting last night but am already looking forward to re-reading and savouring for years to come. If you like stories that have a deep, dream-like quality to them then you'll love this one which made me feel like I was being handed a different piece of thread with each new chapter. The book manages to weave those threads into a thoroughly bewitching, occasionally disorienting, sometimes gritty, fairy tale that was long enough to be a satisfying read but short enough to leave me hungry for more. It reminded me of the ethereal narrative of Italo Calvino's Italo Calvino's 'Invisible Cities' (Vintage Classics) book where the words look solid enough from a distance but then swirl around you like the morning mist if you try to grasp too tightly at them. Hopefully I won't have too long to wait before Sophie's full-length book is published, I'll definitely be first in line to buy it if it has the same thoughful poetic quality to it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Completely Absorbing 26 Oct 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A truly beautifully written story. I downloaded this story on my iphone while I was on the bus, and swiftly became so absorbed that I nearly missed my stop!

The Ruby Slippers tells the tale of a young woman who walks out of one life and into another, tapping into something I think we all find ourselves contemplating at some point in our lives. Sophie Nicholls' writing is deeply evocative - she has a clear love of language which comes through in the way she creates a whole world from her heroine's perspective.

An absolute must-read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow - absolutely brilliant! 6 Mar 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Having downloaded and thoroughly enjoyed the authors book The Dress when I first got my Kindle at Christmas, I was eager to read something else from her. And, wow, although so very different, another 5-star offering. A simply beautiful read - how many of us have ever thought of "stepping outside", but have never done it? Thoroughly recommend it - will keep you thinking long after you have finished it. Hopefully Sophie Nicholls will write more soon - a very talented lady.

5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting 12 Aug 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a haunting, timeless yet modern story that stays with you long after you have read it. The form of the novella - short paragraphs with large spaces between - somehow enhances the content, particularly the sense of disjunction that the main character is feeling.

I too read Ruby Slippers in one sitting, on a train journey. I look forward to more journeys with Sophie Nicholls.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I wanted 21 Feb 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was hoping for a similar feel as the everyday magic books, but this is very different. Dark and serious and quite sad over all. Very well done, but too miserable for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing and engaging 11 Jan 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Having read The Dress by the same author I bought and downloaded this and read it on holiday. It is a novella and is really examining what happens when a woman unravels and walks away from everyone and everything in her life. The intriguing style in which this story has been written enhances the readers compassion and concern for the confusion and disjointed dream world that the "heroine" inhabits whilst she goes through the process of discovering where she needs to be. The way it is structured does feel chaotic at first but I soon got used to that and this became part of it's charm. The story certainly kept me absorbed as it gradually unknotted itself. Out of the ordinary but well worth a read.

This book was a selection of disjointed chapters without a clear story line. The reader was left without any clear conclusions.

I must admit that I found this story disappointing . Having just read The Dress and The Dream which were both excellent it must have been too hard an act to follow.

5.0 out of 5 stars A revelation.
I loved this book, escapism was my interpretation. Sanity can be pushed very slowly over a period of time and a reflex action then has to come into play. Read more
