Praise for The Year the Gypsies Came:

'Wonderful . . . This is a new book with an old and wise heart. It may very well have the makings of a classic' – Guardian

'Beautifully, powerfully and compellingly written . . . extraordinarily moving' – Sunday Times

'This outstanding first novel arcs beautifully to its terrible climax and is deeply moving' – Observer

'Every now and then a book comes along that's unusual, compelling and deeply absorbing yet is so tragically simple, it leaves an indelible trace on the memory. The Year the Gypsies Came is one of these' – Irish Independent

Ruby Red 20 July 2007
By Sophie
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book and read it within 24 hours. It was a gripping story that I was forced to put down when basically I ws just too tired. I bought this book because I read 'The Year The Gypsies Came' and I loved that book so when I saw this one I bought it because I like the way Linzi Glass write her stories. This one is about a girl called Ruby (surprise, surprise) who lives in Johannesburg 1976. She lives in a time when Blacks and Whites were still rivalries, but her parents strongly believe that everyone is equal no matter what colour their skin is. Ruby falls in love with Johann an Afrikan boy 'who's presnce brings hushed whispers and disapproving glances'. I loved this book and I'm reading it for a 2nd time at the moment. It's a really good book. I loved this book and would reccomend it to people who like to read books about reality rather than the boy next door, and also to people who read 'The Year The Gypsies Came'...

WoW!!! 21 Jan 2008
Format:Hardcover
I'm a 14 year old Teenage girl who doesn't enjoy reading. I got given this book for my birthday and one day decided to open it and give it a try. From the very first chapter I was pulled into the story. I have always enjoyed Africa's history but this book made me look at it from a different view. The story not only shows the struggle of the people but also a great amount of love too. All I can now say is It is a MUST READ!!!

AMAZING! 4 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
This book is one of the best books I have ever read! You can't put it down after you start reading, even if it is 2am. It has a great momentum, the characters become your friends and the plot is brilliant. Girls of any age between 12 and 20 would love it. It is a total love story, full of compassion and shows you the world of racism. I can't say a bad word against it!

Tender and inspiring
With 215 pages this is a relatively short book, but it packs a lot into those pages.
It's 1976 and Ruby Winters is a 17 year old English school girl living in the South... Read more

A thought provoking read
A great teen/young adult introduction to issues of apartheid. Issues are presented through the eyes of a white teenage girl: the narrative is placed in a historical context, well... Read more

A good story, badly written
Ruby Red has the potential to be a fantastic book about the American apartheid. But sadly, it's not. The love-element (which is basically the whole thing) is unbelievable. Read more

Excellent
A beautifully written book which cleverly combines the issue of apartheid in 1970's South Africa with teenage romance. Highly recommended for readers of all ages.
