I really enjoyed this book. Anne Holt's illustrations, combined with the clever paper engineering really bring this story to life. Ruby is a great character who brings a sense of humour that is lacking in many more run-of-the-mill children's books...and my daughter enjoyed it too!

Ruby the Ballet Star: A Twirly-whirly pop-up book

This children's book is simply darling. I've read this book many times to my pre-school & kindergarten classes, as well as my step-granddaughters. The boys are patient to listen to the story & examine the pop-ups but usually they move on to another book, whereas the girls like it & sometimes like to recreate the ending of the story & dance around the room. It has a happy ending, colorful & cute illustrations & the pop-ups & twirling are simple yet cute. You'll notice this book is originally from England, on the page where "practiced" is spelled "practised". I always keep this book on the top shelf of my home library & it's survived well since my purchase in 2000. You have to be careful with this book as it's fragile. It's a hard cover book but the string & pop-ups make it easy to accidentally tear. Under my supervision, I allow small children to read it & play. I have 4 plush guinea pigs who coincidentally look exactly like Ruby so this just adds to the fun. After reading this book, children have practiced ballet dance steps. Any aspiring ballerinas out there will think this is wonderful. The underlying lesson in this story is even if you don't look like the others, just keep trying, don't give up, & do the best you can with what you have. Don't worry about comparing yourself to others. Age range of interest: 2 - 5.
