Anton Rubinstein was a great pianist and composed five concerti that are today cruelly neglected. No. 4 is the best known but No. 3 is an equally impressive work full of melody, great writing for the pianist and also some surprises for the listener. Banowetz is well capable of the challenges of both works and these are invigorating performances.
I have no idea why these works are so neglected. Busoni, Paderewski, Rachmaninov, Hofmann and Lhevinne all performed Rubinstein's concerti. Were these great pianists of the past all wrong in their choice of repertoire?
Tchaikovsky was hugely influenced by Anton Rubinstein - listen and some of the effects you will hear will remind you of Tchaikovsky. Really Tchaikovsky's writing should remind you of Rubinstein!
These are splendid works and it is well worth investigating this CD and more of Rubinsten's works.
