When I first listened to these recordings, I could not believe piano could sound so beautiful and so warm! Without forcing, Rubinstein lets music unfold naturally just like a fragile flower. Slow sections of the sonata, for example, is just magical, played with such intricacy, affection and grace. Wanderer Fantasie and Impromptus are played with lavishingly rich tones and grace. You can hear a bit of Chopin in some phrasing and subtle rubato in the G flat major Imprompto played beautifully like no other pianists can. Who could make piano sing, breathe and sigh like this nowadays!
