Synopsis
Peter Paul Rubens (1577 - 1640) was a prodigious artist and one of the most extraordinary figures of the seventeenth century. International diplomat, shrewd businessman, linguist and an intellectual who moved in the highest scholarly circles, Rubens always remained foremost a painter. His energetic genius for handling oil paint made his works prized by the rulers of royal courts across Europe. This book traces Rubens's rise from hesitant beginnings to become the dominant international painter of his generation. It investigates the incredible visual memory that facilitated the flowering of his genius, climaxing with the remarkable burst of creative energy seen in paintings such as Samson and Delilah (National Gallery, London) and The Battle of the Amazons (Alte Pinakothek, Munich). The focus on Rubens's early career means that the works featured are by his hand alone - undiluted by workshop assistance. Published to accompany the exhibition Rubens: A Master in the Making at the National Gallery, London, from 26 October 2005 to 15 January 2006.
