some good '60s psych 7 July 2006
By Martyn VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
The Rubble compilations rounded up almost all the best pysch singles made in the '60s. Not surprisingly, the average quality of each individual album began to fall around the early 'teens as most of the real gems had been on the early compilations. For this reason you should get the box set of Rubble 1-10 before getting this.

Nevertheless, it's worth going for both, simply because you're buying each album for a fiver, and once you've got both you've got the '60s basically sorted in your collection. Any time friends come round and say that the '60s were about Motown, Sandie Shaw and Freddie and the Dreamers, or even the Beatles and Stones, play them some of this stuff and it'll soon shut them up.

I have had all the Rubble compilations for some time now, and at first I was in agreement with the customer who thought that the quality deteriorated once the Rubbles got to the early `teens. However, I recently dug them out again, and I would now say that volumes 11-20 are every bit as strong as the first half of the collection. In my opinion, volumes 11 and 15 are amongst the best in the whole series, whilst on the earlier collection, volume 9 was comparatively rather weak, so one can hardly say that all the best tracks were on the early volumes, and the later ones represent only the dregs, for this is not the case.
For those not already familiar with Rubbles 1-10, Rubble is arguably the greatest collection of obscure 1960s psych/freakbeat on the market; the sound quality is very good (forget "Chocolate Soup..."etc - this is the real deal!) and a large majority of the material is first class. As I have already said, the later volumes are every bit as good as the earlier ones. Featured bands include the legendary Rupert's People ("I've Got The Love" is great!), The Pretty Things ("Eagle's Son" represents their strongest venture into the psychedelic world) and Southern Sound (their "I Don't Wanna Go" from 1966 was voted number 4 in MOJO magazine's Freakbest Top 50).
I could talk all day about the virtues of Rubble, but it won't do any good; you really need to hear this stuff before you can appreciate its magic.
