5.0 out of 5 stars The king of psychedelic collections! 9 Aug 2011
Format:Audio CD
Whilst I am not a 60s original (I was born in 1988!), I grew up listening to music from that era, and have been a serious 60s music anorak for about ten years now. Very quickly, I had heard the complete recordings of all the major groups and artists from this era, but I was still hungry for more. That's where Rubble stepped in...
I now own many compilations of obscure 60s music but none can compare to this one. Although a number of the tracks are availiable on other collections, it is important to remember that this was one of the first albums of obscure British stuff (dating from the early 80s), so, in my opinion anyway, subsequent compilations are copying from this one. What sets this aside from a number of its contemporaries is the sound quality - these DO NOT sound like they have been lifted off someone's original vinyl. Therefore, I tend to regard Rubble as an "official", authorised album, as opposed to some makeshift deal.
So, the music...true, it is not 100% top quality (although, to be fair, out of 140 songs, you cannot expect every single one to be great!), but there is enough serious quality on here to make this a worthy addition to anyone's collection. Volume 1, "The Psychedelic Snarl" (originally all 20 Rubbles were issued individually on vinyl)is particularly strong; "Save My Soul" by Wimple Winch and The Craig's "I Must Be Mad" held the top two spots in MOJO magazine's Freakbeat Top 30, whilst "The Spider and The Fly" by The Dakotas is an unsung classic if ever there was one. In my opinion, there are generally only one or two songs on each CD that are not really worth bothering about, which means that there are at least 120 songs on this boxed set that most definitely are worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars for POP fans everywhere... 24 Mar 2006
Format:Audio CD
The 'psychedelic' aspect of this collection is somewhat overplayed and may even put people off. This isn't a collection of tuneless freakouts and fuzzy garage bands. Most of these records are high-quality British pop from the golden age - they just didn't get airplay or even retrospective fame. Nothing really 'trippy' about bands like the Poets for instance - just quality pop from before it became 'rock' music. P&P are to be congratulated for putting this fine collection together - in this CD and download age, it's quite possible that exquisite unknown records like The Parking Lot's 'World Spinning Sadly' or Silk's 'Plaster Sky' would never be heard again. There are a few bad ones of course - in 160 how could there not be? - and maybe a few that have (since?) been over-anthologised (Kaleidoscope, Tintern Abbey) but most are at least fascinating and a good number are astonishingly good. Only downer is album 9, which is all Dutch stuff and not really for me, although some may enjoy. The booklet is witty and informative and the compilers love for the music is infectious. If you love this magic period in British pop, and thought you'd heard it all, this is for you - the next best thing to finding a trasure trove of old 45s in a boot sale and playing your way through them. Check out vol.2 also - just as good and worth every penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars For series Psych fans everywhere 7 April 2003
Format:Audio CD
The Rubble collections were always for the series collector only and this reissue of the first ten volumes confirms that. None of these made much of an impression on the charts during the 60's, even though some did go on to enjoy success under different names or in other bands.
With all compilations such as this, there are a few gems which should have brought more success to the bands that made them. On the other hand, there are a few songs which are just plain terrible.
I have still given it five stars though as this is a compilation that has everything you want. Great sound, brilliantly researched booklet and the added bonus of all of the original artwork being reproduced.
This is not for the casual record buyer, but for any series fan of psych that does not have these in their collection already, this is a must buy.
