Product Description

About the Author

Poker is not a game to me. It’s a religion. I have beliefs I can’t prove. I have saints I revere. Countless times I have held vigils all night and into the next day, seated patiently at the oval altar. And then there’s the reading I do from the ancient scrolls, and the sacred rituals I perform, and the holy lingo I speak, and of course there’s the bonded brotherhood. It’s a religion, no doubt. My elders taught me the ways of poker as a child, and I have been a faithful practitioner ever since. And I have been blessed. The poker gods saw to it that I survived 17 years as a professional poker player, despite severe degenerate tendencies, or perhaps because of them. And that’s just the beginning. I’ve had the good fortune to coach 70 players from around the world, mostly pros. My first book, Elements of Poker, has been shown much love. And my video series, The Eightfold Path to Poker Enlightenment, won the Best Series Award at DeucesCracked.com. What happens next? I think I’ll have lunch. (Tommy’s website is tommyangelo.com and his blog is at tommyangelo.com/blog.)

The book is split into several sections covering various issues - stories related to some of the authors friends, fictional stories etc - but all related to the joys of poker

Each essay is generally 5 or less pages - so this is a easy and quick read. The writing style makes it pleasure to read

The title story is a great example and you might be able to find some examples on-line - the essays are generally taken from previously published articles and blogs etc

If you like poker or gambling stories, you can't go wrong with this excellent book by Tommy Angelo. I have been playing poker since about 2000, and have read many poker books. It's the kind of book you can dip into at anytime, but I read it in a couple of sittings, I was that immersed. There are many funny and insightful tales from the green felt. It is a window into a world of colourful characters. His strategy book, Elements of Poker, is also essential reading for any poker player.

Another great poker book from Tommy 10 Aug 2011
By crashwhips - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Through his brilliant book on all the intangibles of poker, The Elements of Poker, and material he has made available online on how to play poker and live better, such as his video series The Eightfold Path to Poker Enlightenment on the poker training site Deuces Cracked, which in my opinion was an absolute masterpiece, I have learned an enormous amount from Tommy about how to win more and suffer less at poker, and moreover, to be a happier, better, kinder person in the rest of my life as well. He has certainly taught me more useful lessons than any other poker author or coach, and I might go so far as to say he has been the single person who has had the greatest positive influence on my life.

Needless to say, when I learned he had released a new poker book, I was very excited to read it, and it did not disappoint. Unlike The Elements of Poker, which was more or less an instruction manual on how to become a better poker player and lead a happier life, A Rubber Band Story takes a different tact and is composed of short pieces relating to poker from a more artistic standpoint. It features essays, anecdotes, fiction, and parables. While I would say you should begin reading this book with the expectation of being entertained rather than being told how to win more money, that's not to say that there are not numerous poker and life lessons that can be taken away from reading it.

I thoroughly enjoyed all the pieces; my favorites were the short fiction and the parables inspired by George Orwell's Animal Farm. Tommy has an engaging, extremely readable writing style that is perfect for recounting tales of poker degeneracy. He also has a knack for concluding his tales with very clever final sentences that wrap up the piece up perfectly and make you laugh or smile to yourself. If you are solely looking to learn how to win more money at poker, you might want to read The Elements of Poker or watch his Eightfold Path video series first, but if you want to read an entertaining book about poker where you can pick up a few valuable life and poker lessons in the process, then you can't go wrong with this one. Highly recommended.

A must read book on poker, life and everything in between. 2 Jun 2011
By R. Mackay - Published on Amazon.com

I've been following the writings of Tommy since they began many many years ago. From the small articles in various poker magazines to the stories on his blog, each one contains a lesson about poker, life, or something in between. This collection of work is never far from my reach and neither should it be far from yours. Pick it up and read 2 pages or 20 and you are almost guaranteed to have a smile on your face and a new window opened in your mind. Simply put, go all in on this one.

Unique, entertaining, and perfect for any player 26 May 2011
By Brian - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
If you play cards, you should be familiar with Tommy Angelo's work. Its repeated ad nauseam within the poker world, but who am I to buck that trend: he's not an "abc" coach. He's much more valuable than that. His books aren't about whether you should fold your blinds or defend them to the death (not that he doesn't have a strong opinion on the subject), but rather making sure you are keeping yourself in the right mindset to make the decisions that work best for you. It matters not if you are trying to build a high stakes career or casually playing low stakes for a short period of time, Tommy's work will help you optimize the experience and remain at peace with your decisions.

As with his Elements of Poker, A Rubber Band Story is a very easy, enjoyable read. While Elements focuses on the play of the game, Rubber Band is filled with random short stories and articles that many of us can relate to, told from his unique perspective, and all filled with multiple little pearls of wisdom. My personal favorite: Time is on My Side, it captures some of the essence of what I really like about poker when I play seriously. Random stories that have little to do with actual play but are somehow made relevant, and several entertaining actual hand stories. And seriously: I doubt there has ever been a better description of the game of poker than what is written on the back cover of the book.

Hard to put down 8 Aug 2011
By Matt Flynn - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
A Rubber Band Story was hard to put down. Hard enough that I passed on a session of poker at the Bellagio, during the one week a year I have to play poker without any constraints, to finish it, which says a ton. It's funny and warmly entertaining, and such a clear mirror of the poker world. Tommy is the best writer in poker. I strongly recommend this as a gift to poker playing friends.

An absolute must read!!!! 29 July 2011
By Nick Chapman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I have been following Tommy's writings for a few years now and he just continues to impress me. This book entertained me from the very first page to the last. Tommy has such a unique personality and writing style, he stands far out from other poker writers. I was amazed how much his stories related to my own experiences, even playing poker at a novice level. If you have played poker at any level, you will love this read. I am already looking forward to Tommy's next piece of work!!!
