Product Description

Product Description

Unlock the mystery of one of the great spiritual treasures of the ages. Omar Khayyam's famous poem, The Rubaiyat, is loved by Westerners as a hymn of praise to sensual delights. In the East, his quatrains enjoy a very different reputation: they are known as a deep allegory of the soul's romance with God. Even there, however, the knowing is based on who and what Omar Khayyam was: a sage and mystic. As for what the quatrains actually mean, most of them have remained a mystery in the East as much as in the West. Now after eight centuries, Paramhansa Yogananda, one of the great mystics of our times, a master of yoga and the author of the now-classic Autobiography of a Yogi, explains the mystery behind Omar's famous poem. This book contains the essence of that great revelation. Unavailable in book form since its first penning more than sixty years ago, THE RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM EXPLAINED is available at last, edited by one of Yogananda's close disciples, Swami Kriyananda (J. Donald Walters.)

Exquisite 26 Jun 2002
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
This is a beautiful book in many ways. The presentation of the book is wonderful, I wasn't expecting it to be so attractive. It would make a great gift, but it is also lovely to own for your own pleasure.

The layout of the book also can't be faulted; each quatrain is provided individually, with a paraphrase section, extended meaning and then a section on keys to the meaning. This makes the book easy to read either in one go or to treat the book as something to be dipped into. Also there are pictures included, inspired by some of the quatrains.

I treasure this book now. The poetry is truly beautiful and soul inspiring, while the presentation only adds to the experience and the enjoyment. This is a very deep book, with contemplation being a key to it's enjoyment. Yogananda has done a wonderful job of "explaining" this work of beauty. Although his language is easy to understand, the beauty is never sacrificed.

But this book and treasure what it has to teach you...

Wonderful Soul Food 12 Dec 1998

Format:Hardcover
This was an interesting book by a yoga master. It fully and in depth explains Omar Khayyam's Rubaiyat. It was an interesting reading experience that gives you a taste of Persian poetry. Yoganda has certainly outdone himself in this explained Rubaiyat based on Edward Fitzgerald's first translation of the mysterious persian poet's masterpiece.

Wow! 15 April 1999
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
If you want the best of mysticism and poetry, read this beautiful and deep book. I've fallen in love again with reading poetry, and I've been given a new understanding of eastern wisdom.

Even though the commentaries are full of esoteric wisdom, Yogananda writes in a poetic style that is easy on the eyes, mind, and soul.

I quote from Yogananda here: "Come, fill the Cup of Consciousness with the divine wine of bliss! Cast away your material desires (deceitful, because forever disillusioning), and fling into the crackling fire of fresh spiritual enthusiasm your robe of penitence for having ever indulged in them."
