Product Description

CD Description

Misia is one of the biggest and most distinctive stars of the poetic "fado" genre. Of mixed Portuguese and Spanish parentage, Misia has lived the life--cabaret, dancing, and fado. She has achieved worldwide acclaim since 1993, winning music prizes in Japan and Germany as well as at home in Portugal, and selling 100s of thousands of albums in the process. Ruas (Roads) takes the form of journey across two CDs. On "Lisboarium", the first, Misia dreams of Lisbon far away, and on "&Tourists", she brings together the work of artists from a wide range of musical backgrounds--including Nine Inch Nails’ "Hurt" and Joy Division’s "Love Will Tear Us Apart". A truly remarkable collection of songs from a truly remarkable voice.

One of my favourite albums of recent times. One half consists of mainly traditional fado while the other half is a cosmopolitan mix of different styles, ranging from solid pop-rock to Spanish flamenco, Japanese traditional music and sensual Italian slowmusic. Absolute high-flyers on the fado cd are Joana Rosa, fado inventaire (in French), é noite na mouraria, autopsicografia (on a poem of Fernando Pessoa) and um raio de luz. As said, the second cd is very different in style, but I regard hurt, pour ne pas vivre seul, era de maggio and rosa dos ventos as definite highlights. It seems to me that a pretty good job was done here in improving/altering some of these songs compared to earlier versions. For instance, it is interesting to compare Mísia's upbeat energetic version of rosa dos ventos to the original bossanova version of it found on youtube. Refreshing improvement imo!

First let me state that Misia is a fantastic singer. She really is! You will find this out frm listening to Canto or Drama Box. But not here. This album was an ill-conceived disaster from start to finish.

The title of this Album is "Ruas", however,I fail to understand the connection as the 2 discs are so completely different from each other.

Disc 1 "Lisboarium"; is standard Mísia that I have come to love.

Disc 2 "&Tourists"; came as a big shock. It consists of songs played with "over the top" rock instrumentation that does not compliment Mísia's voice or the lyrics. A number of these songs I have known and loved from albums by other artists, but these arrangements and choice of instruments absolutely destroy the songs. Of the 11 tracks therein, I consider only 4 to be any good (tracks 4, 7, 9 and 10). The rest irritated me beyond belief.

I don't know what Mísia was trying to achieve; but Disc 2 belongs in the rubbish bin. "A truly remarkable collection of songs" destroyed.

4 stars forDisc 1.
2 stars for Disc 2.
