I had never heard of Vita but when I discovered it was part of Ruark (which made my beautifully-finished speakers) I was happy to choose over Bose and B&W offerings. The R4 was bought mainly for its aesthetic properties and indeed was not disappointed when it was finally un-boxed. It really is gorgeous item and, like my speakers, really beautifully made. The sound quality is excellent too but does need placement on a solid surface.
I only have a couple of minor gripes.

1 The remote control unit seemed great at first. It looks ingenious but in reality is less practical than more conventionally-shaped controls. It takes two depressions to change input, no accessing particular tracks on CDs (you have to step up), moreover the delayed response to volume changes is a bit wearisome.

2 The cover for the MP3 dock feels cheap and tatty.

Overall, still an easy 5 out of 5 and would highly recommend.

This unit is beautifully designed. Sort of modern-retro, if I can say that here. Easy to set up and use. One power cable is the only cable there is. Speakers are all part of the unit as well as the sub-woofer. It has a docking station built-in for our i-stuff. Plays discs, FM, DAB, has a USB port and the sound is killer!
Delivered in one day.

Having purchased and used the RuarkAudio R4i for a month now, I agree completely with A.M. Pardoe's review. As with most other reviews my only complaint is against the remote control. While I have got used to its un-intuitiveness, what drives me mad is that the remote is the only way to operate the system. I have to hunt around for it to turn it down or change the source. Also, when it is absent from its dock, the system loses its visual appeal - the empty dock looks like an ashtray. This annoyed me so much that I seriously thought of returning it, but its other superior qualities have eventually overridden this. I wonder how much another remote would cost? it would then be 5 stars.

For the past 30 years I have been an avid hi-fi upgrader with a current system costing around £8000. With my ageing eardrums finding it evermore difficult to justify my living room being arranged for maximum hi-fi pleasure(and the constant nagging of a long suffering wife)I decided to downgrade. Obviously this product cannot give the separation and presentation of my previous set up but it gives a good enough sound for me to enjoy my music collection for my remaining years. I find it excellent with acoustic (folk/country/blues) but it also does OK with other types of music. My preferred internal settings are 3D sound(on)Loudness(off) and EQ(normal).I also adjust the bass accordingly as I am going along. I have a digital ariel on my roof for radio reception and the internal ariel on the Ruark unscrews to allow the connection of external ariel. One small gripe is that the Ruark does not display track/artist information when my i-pod is plugged in. Other than that, highly recommended. Looks great sat on my light oak sideboard.

I have been using a Bose Wave system for a few years. Loved it. well did until I heard this in John Lewis playing Mody's Porcelain. I was knocked out.

Its a big machine, probably twice the volume of the Bose but it has three speakers to the Bose's two being two to the front and one underneath - cool idea. The music from it is punchy and full of tone. The system has been awarded full marks in What HiFi and I can see why.

The system plays CDs, MP3s, iPods, and has a FM and DAB radio which has the best DAB reception of any radio I have or have used.

Over the past week I have had it playing Dire Straits, Joni Mitchell and Tubular Bells on the CD player, my iPod collection and Spotify through the iPod (that app is so fantastic!!!). The DAB radio is crisp and found 72 stations whereas my Pure found 33.

Any downsides. Well yes, the circular controls take a while to master and the instructions are rubbish - not enough information. Bit the sound makes up for all of that. Just loving it!

I would highly recommend this product. I have a pretty good hi fi and this is not quite as good but very good all the same. I use the DAB/CD in my kitchen and it does a pretty good job off filling it with great sound. The only downside I have found so far is that the USB does not accept FLAC or WAV files which is really important to me. I have contacted Ruark and asked them the question and am still waiting for a reply. In conclusion if you are pretty demanding about your sound then this will not disappoint.
