I felt compelled to write this review, simply because I've just seen the episode in question broadcast on BBC1.

The Royle Family was always a stunningly written, fabulously acted sitcom, but this one-off special, which has arrived after a six year gap, confirms that The Royle Family will leave a lasting mark on British comedy.

We join the Royles six years on, with new additions to the family and one very frail Nana. But dispite her failing health, Nana is still very much herself. Just to hear her talk about 'her dead friend Elsie's daughter' is to fill a gap that BBC comedy has been aching to fill for some years. This is funny, and more importantly, bitter-sweet comedy. For every couple of laughs, there's a heart-wrenching moment that will have you in tears. The best comedy, afterall, will make you cry.

I urge everyone to buy this DVD, if only for the side-splitting remote control batteries incident. Superb.

After watching my collection of the Royle Family DVD's for the 'umpteenth' time, I decided to complete my collection with the specials. This one was a bitter sweet episode, as Nana died in it. There's quite a moving scene prior to that when Barb is styling her hair. Great acting.

A nice feature long episode that will appeal to fans of the series.

PS: I couldn't get over how much Dave's son ('Baby David') looks like Dave!

I've just finished watching a recorded version of this show - so I don't know what the DVD is like - but I gotta say, this was something else. I've always been amazed at the emotional power of The Royle Family - the way an episode could just dawdle along, not much happening, and then suddenly hit you with some beautiful poignant moment - and this special really took that to a new level. I cried so much! (I'm a thirty year-old bloke). It's funny, too - not Borat funny, but it's better than that. It's something lasting, something human and real and true. And, I don't really know what I'm saying but - by God! - this was good.

Caroline Aherne, where are you?? The world needs more of your work; more of your inspirational writing. We were always Royle Family fans, and loved every minute of every show, so were delighted to find this gem available. The writing is superb, the performances outstanding, and the familiar minimalist approach draws you in once more to the Royle household. Norma is now living with them, and as usual is the butt of Jim's jokes. Add to the familiar favourites, a string of potential boyfriends for Cheryl (her ad in the singles column is hilarious) as they are wheeled in to meet nanna, and sit by her bedside, or on the couch with Denise and Barb. The simple moments of genius like Barb putting curlers in Norma's hair, and Jim dancing with Norma in the hallway are the quintessential 'Royle' moments of warmth and joy. Have the tissues ready.

Make sure to have a box of tissues handy when you watch this episode. The most touching portrayal of the love of family and the loss of a loved one I have ever seen! I don't want to discount the funny moments, which were interspersed throughout the episode, they came just at the time when you needed them most! I can't say enough about this episode..... the talent is outstanding... the writing, the acting, the directing. What can you say about Caroline Aherne....a genius!! The team of Aherne and Cash have outdone themselves! This dvd is an absolute MUST SEE!!!!!!

This is great. A real return to form. Emotive and funny at the same time. Ties up a number of loose ends but also offers promise for the future. Wonderful stuff.

Welcome back!

I laughed and laughed, then cried quite a lot and then laughed again... perfection!

If you loved The Royal Family in the first 3 series then you will not be dissapointed, more of the same but better.

By the way, DO NOT miss the outakes... Liz Smith made me wee.

I had waited until Christmas day to watch this. To say l am a fan of the Royle family, is an understatement, l quite simply adore all the cast who appear. Being lucky enough to have met Ricky twice, and he was a Gentleman.
I wanted to savour the show and what a day to do it. Anyway the show.....
We all cried at Doris Day's Ka sar'a,and her passing and we all laughed at a surprise appearance of Twiggy (Geoffrey Hughes),and the dance laying the laminate, Nana's hair extensions, and her posh nails. One of my favourite bits was Jim dancing in the hall with Norma. Could it have been better? NO WAY, l would go as far as to say it was TV History in the making.
Anyone who has lived in Wythenshawe in a council house will understand where all this comes from.
If l had to find a fault (and l cant really) it would be that Caroline Aherne wore a tad to much make up, as she is beautiful enough, l know thats her character, so it isnt a fault..
There are so many funny bits in it, l could write all day. If you have seen one episode of the Royle family and liked it, you will love this.
Its one of the 10 things l would take on a desert island, can l say more?
Well, done Craig, Phil AND OF COURSE CAROLINE, (just learnt how to edit
my review)
