Synopsis

The Royle Family - The Queen of Sheba was well worth the wait. When I heard Caroline was doing a one off I expected laughs and comedy galore. What I got was somewhat different. Don't get me wrong, this was still funny in stages, but instead of laughing till I cried - I just well - cried - uncontrollably actually!

The Royle family have changed a lot in 6 years - in some aspects anyway - no don't panic yet, Jim is still as lazy and obnoxious as he ever was, Barb is still as downtrodden as ever, Denise, now pregnant again and sporting some new vocab (Babe) and some very dogdy hair extensions, is as superficial as ever, Dave is still gormeless and Baby David has transformed into Little David a karate obsessed spoilt brat worthy of a visit from Supernanny. Anthony's transformation is the most surprising of all. From being a slightly bumbling almost goofy-looking boy, he is now a high powered executive with money and a snappy suit. But it is Nana's situation that is the most heartwrenching of all. On her last legs, the family strive to make all her last dying wishes come true, and while retaining its wonderful wit and humour this episode is also a poignant portrayal of a family in denial about losing their lynch-pin! Denise finally has a baby girl and names it Norma after the family Matriach! A lovely touching moment.

The most upsetting bit of all is in the hospital where Nanna is one by one visited by all who knew her (including next-door and twiggy) while Scarlet Ribbons plays poignantly in the background.

Nanna's final scenes with her daughter break your heart and Barbara's "Oh God Look after her" had me sobbing through a box of tissues.

Anyone expecting a lighthearted slice of Royle life should think again before buying this, but it is a beautifully written episode and what a beautiful way to send Nanna off to the Spirit in the Sky.

Goodbye Norma Speakman - You're candle burned out long before your legend ever did!

The Royle Family, if anymore pan out just won't be same without Nana.

I've just finished watching a recorded version of this show - so I don't know what the DVD is like - but I gotta say, this was something else. I've always been amazed at the emotional power of The Royle Family - the way an episode could just dawdle along, not much happening, and then suddenly hit you with some beautiful poignant moment - and this special really took that to a new level. I cried so much! (I'm a thirty year-old bloke). It's funny, too - not Borat funny, but it's better than that. It's something lasting, something human and real and true. And, I don't really know what I'm saying but - by God! - this was good.

Absolute classic! 3 Nov 2006
This is great. A real return to form. Emotive and funny at the same time. Ties up a number of loose ends but also offers promise for the future. Wonderful stuff.
