Synopsis
This major, full-colour, large-format book is essential reading for all Royal Marines and Royal Navy personnel as well as military and naval readers interested in historical and modern warfare. The aim of the book is to present 35 amphibious operations during the last 100 years with analysis of tactics and outcome, so that modern personnel can appreciate the lessons of previous operations. The Editor has brought together a formidable group of naval writers and professional lecturers from Sandhurst and the Joint Services College to cover each chapter. They include Julian Thompson, Robin Neillands, Stephen Badsey and Michael Hickey. There are actions covered from all the major modern navies, such as Gallipoli (1915), Guadalcanal (1942), Operation Sealion (1940), D-Day (1944), Inchon (1950), Vietnam (1965), Falklands (1982), Iraq (1990-1 and 2003). Other chapters deal with how specific forces have used and developed amphibious operations over a period of time - Japanese Amphibious Warfare 1918-52 and Soviet Amphibious Landings in the Black Sea 1941-44. The book is complemented by a high number of contemporary drawings and photographs. Each chapter ends with a a biography of the author and a comprehensive Further Reading list for anyone who wants to delve deeper into the subject. The book has been put together by, and has the full backing of, the Royal Marines and Royal Navy and all royalties will go to their benevolent funds.
