5.0 out of 5 stars Very good book, buy it 3 Jan 2010

Royal Marines Fitness: Physical Training Manual
I'm too old to be trying to join the Marines but I do like to keep fit. Over the years I have bought a number of Training Manuals and this is the first time I have been physically bothered to write a review. This book is excellent. If your looking to join the Marines or, like myself, are interested in the details of how fitness is incorporated into their work then this book is well worth buying. The real strength of this book, however, is that the Author is a Royal Marine PTI who is setting out, without any macho posturing, how to design your own fitness programme, whatever your requirements or fitness level. This is not a "10 weeks to being a Special Forces Ninja". It is an intelligent description of how to get fit, quickly, cheaply and practically. I fully recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin. 13 Jan 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm training for a military fitness test and have received so much advice ranging from 'just run faster and when the going gets tough just grin and bear it' to in depth explanations of anatomy, thus I had a little information overload. This book, in my opinion, is straight forward, practical and realistic.

The author has presented the information clearly, the photos are brilliant and the advice easy to understand. Whether you are someone who is an avid gym goer, an endurance enthusiast, taking a fitness test or simply interested in getting involved in fitness you will not be disappointed with this book.

It shows you what the human body is capable of and re-iterates the importance of an understanding of the mind and body dynamic.

Buy this book, at the very least you will enjoy simply reading a well written book and at the most you will take your fitness to the next stage whatever your level.

If you're interested in the Royal Marines there is a DVD series available which follows the 32 week training course called Commando on the front line - it's fascinating and shows exactly why the Royal Marines are so revered.

One final small point, it is nice to see someone re-iterate the simple 'calories in, calories out' advice. I have several friends who truly desire to eat what they want and exercise little, they then become perplexed when they gain weight. This book (although it's a tiny section as the Royal Marines generally never suffer from weight problems, understandably) does establish this point, albeit in a tiny section.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for begginners 29 Aug 2011

Format:Hardcover
This is a great book and is full of information and knowledge.

It is very detaled on every aspect on fitness, however even though it is a very good book and is very knowledgable I belive this book will benefit beginners more than anything. For somebody with a lot if training experience or a high knowledge of fitness this book would not benefit them as much.

But if you are just starting out or want to learn more about fitness definatly buy this.
It also has loads! of information on life in the royal marines if thats your goal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top book, Top author 3 Jan 2010
By Shoto
Format:Hardcover
This book came up as a recommendation when I was looking at another fitness training book. Seeing that the author was, until recently, a serving Marine I mentioned it to a friend, also a long-serving Marine.

To keep it short, his verdict was that the author was a good guy, who knew his stuff and that the book is very good.
As he has more than 10 years service in the Marines, a branch of the armed services where a very high fitness level is a basic job requirement and knowing how fanatical he is himself about maintaining his fitness, that's good enough recommendation for me to add it to my birthday list.

5.0 out of 5 stars FIGHTING FITNESS! 4 Mar 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Fantastic! This is even more detailed than the car manuals! As an avid fitness fan, I have a massive collection of fitness and training books. This was by far one of my best buys, it covers everything you could want to know on training.

The Commandos are among the fittest, most elite athletes in the world and this book demonstrates many ways of getting to their level, including tests etc...

I can't possibly go into all the aspects of training this covers, please trust me that it's a must.

Anyone looking to apply to the Marines will need this book as a guide to fitness, be prepared BEFORE you go.

This book is excellent. It contains the experience and philosophy that have formed the Royal Marines into one of the most formidable fighting units on the earth. Yet it also portrays the essence of the Corps, which is not only about fighting or war. Having a RM PTi write this book is a coup, as the experience of training people to the incredible standards required is clearly passed on to the public in this book. It shows you what is required mentally, gives concrete, up to date instruction that can be applied at all levels. There is no bull here, and it shows. One of the best books I have read in a long time, and inspirational in helping me achieve the fitness goals I have. If you only buy one fitness manual, you won't go wrong with this...
