'Anyone foolish enough to think about adventurous travel needs help. There could be no better source than this invaluable handbook. It would be a mistake to set out without studying it carefully.' - Bill Bryson 'Indispensable - the only guide with real reach and authority.' - Redmond O'Hanlon

Shane Winser of the Expedition Advisory Centre at the Royal Geographic Society has put together an authoritative handbook with chapters written by contributors at the top of their fields. This book takes you through a step by step guide to planning and running a major expedition to remote places: everything from raising finance to risk assessment is covered, with many practical tips. Taken together with its sister publication Expedition Medicine Expedition Medicine: The Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographersyou have a comprehensive guide to preparing and undertaking the adventure of a lifetime. Highly recommended. Dr Dick Morgan

Basic, common sense 3 Feb 2012
I thought this would provide more specific advise but is very general, and most of the information is common sense. Definitely is not a specialist book, and a few minutes on the internet could provide you with more in-depth expedition advice.
