Product Description

Review

"* "Wonderful characters, elegant, witty writing, perfect period detail, and rapturously romantic. Georgette Heyer achieves what the rest of us only aspire to." - Katie Fforde * "My favourite historical novelist - stylish, romantic, sharp, and witty. Her sense of period is superb, her heroines are enterprising, and her heroes dashing. I owe her many happy hours." - Margaret Drabble * "A writer of great wit and style - I've read her books to ragged shreds." - Kate Fenton, Daily Telegraph * "Every girl, whatever her age, needs her own complete set of Heyer titles. More than romantic they are witty, elegant, stylish and the best comedies of manners since Jane Austen. Required reading for everyone." - Diane Pearson * "Georgette Heyer is unbeatable" - India Knight"

I purchased this book not expecting much of it as it would be mostly the historical account of Charles II escape after the battle of Worcester. Honestly I thought I might have a hard time finishing it. But after reading chapter one I couldn't put itdown until I finished it!

I found this book hugely enjoyable and if you are a Heyer fan at heart you probably will too. I searched the bibliography at the end of the book and you can find the Boscobel Tracts on the web for free. That is a book compiled 1830 or so which tells the same account from written by the actual people back in the 1600's and by the king himself as told so S Pepys. It even gives you the "epilogue" that Heyer did not include. Yes, the story is in itself amazing (the Royal Oak at Boscoble etc) and endeared me very much to Charles II. Heyer's genious, however, transforms it from "very interesting" to delightful, compelling, moving, humorous and vastly entertaining. If you are not looking for a "romance" you'll enjoy this book and won't regret buying it.

I found Royal Escape a splendid story woven round the true historical event of King Charles II of England endeavouring to escape to France. It is a story of great endurance as he and his small band of loyal supporters search for safe houses, hide in ancient oaks, travel for miles on horseback and foot through torrenting rain and blazing sun, bluffing their way through towns and villages full of Roundhead soldiers in the south of England, as they deserately try to reach the coast and find a boat to take him to safety across the Channel. He is clearly a man of great courage, stamina and charm, and much loved by those loyal to him. Everyone who helps him risks death. Does he make it? You will have to read the story to find out.
