Which along with being kidnapped a lot summed up Mr Race's career. I am not a Football Fan but as I had two brothers who bordered on fanatic and a Father who thought that if there was a God his name would be Alexander Matthew "Matt" Busby, his prophet Robert "Bobby" Charlton and his Temple Old Trafford.

So as defence against choosing between Red and Blue I plumped for Melchester it was like being Swiss in a football mad house - safe yet no threat. I actually came to enjoy reading Roy's adventures third hand ( I was still low on the totem pole ) and like many other things from my childhood of the 1970's I looked back on Roy with Great affection.

I bought this as a Christmas Present for my Older Brother and of course "Tested" it first and was surprised to find that Joe Colquhoun possibly the greatest British comic artist of the 20th Century not only drew Roy but also wrote it for a long period even though he knew nothing about football!!
It's informative about both Racey's Career and the behind the scenes at the comic.

My Brother was overjoyed to get this, as like many fans of the time he had two teams Manchester United and Melchester Rovers and even though he stopped reading it in the 1970's he bemoaned "Roy of the Rovers" demise in the 1990's.
Roy though fictional was a role model in the mould of Duncan Edwards, Bobby Moore and Stanley Matthews.

I bought this second hand for the princely sum of one penny plus postage and packing and it was worth it.
