Product Description

The Complete Studio Recordings 1972-1982, is the first complete Roxy Music box set to be released on CD.  It includes each of the eight ‘Roxy Music’ Studio albums: Roxy Music, For Your Pleasure, Stranded, Country Life, Siren, Manifesto, Flesh And Blood and Avalon.    Each of the studio albums have been taken back to their original form.  New 2012 flat transfers from the original analogue master tapes ensure the audio sounds truer to its original LP sound. The box set is completed with two bonus discs of singles, B-sides and alternative mixes.  Featuring non album singles: “Virginia Plain” (plus B-side “The Numberer”) and number one single “Jealous Guy” (originally written and recorded by John Lennon and covered by Roxy Music in 1981 as a tribute to John Lennon, following his death in 1980) and packed with tracks never available on CD before including: “Do The Strand” (USA 7” Mix), “The Thrill Of It All” (Edit), “The Thrill Of It All” (USA Single 7” Mix), “Love Is The Drug” (USA 7” Single Mix), “Both Ends Burning” (7” Mix), “For Your Pleasure” (Live), “Oh Yeah” (7” Version), “To Turn On You” (1981 B-Side to Jealous Guy),  “Avalon” (7” Single Version), “Take A Chance With Me” (7” Single Version), “Take A Chance With Me” (USA 7” Mix), “The Main Thing” (Remix).

Uncut – August 2012 – 10/10

“Ample testament to the fact that, for an unparalleled five or six album run, Roxy Music were the most distinguished adventurers British pop has ever known.”

Classic Rock Magazine – August 2012 – 10/10

“These recordings are a map of a supremely original band’s journey from unconsolidated beginnings to rarified perfection.”

Mojo – September 2012 - ****

“The most striking feature of this 10-CD collection is what a fine singles band Roxy Music were.”

Q – September 2012-   ****

“If you want a dazzling 10-disc lesson about pop’s potential for miracles and magic, then wallow here.”

What you get is 10 CDs in a smart black slipcase at a good value price. Eight of the CDs are the original Roxy Music studio albums, while the last two are a double CD of singles, B-sides and alternative mixes. You will have heard many but not all of these if you have the box set The Thrill of it All, but for most people this is now the box to have.

Roxy Music was that stylish, inventive band from the seventies and eighties which combined the distinctive crooning of Bryan Ferry, the quirky electronics of Brian Eno (in the first two albums that is), and the musical excellence of guitarist Phil Manzanera, saxophonist Andy Mackay and drummer Paul Thompson. With a few variations of course.

The notable thing for me is the progression of the band and how well it survived Eno's departure. Stranded, the third album and the first without Eno, is perhaps the best and still has traces of experimentalism. By the time you get to the sumptuous melodies of Avalon this is a band that is less interesting but so rich and polished that I still love it.

Now the boxed set ... there are good things and bad things. First and foremost, the sound is good, probably the best on CD in most cases (I have not had time to hear all of them right through yet). The sound has not been dynamically compressed for extra loudness and is clean and detailed. When first announced, this set was to have high resolution DVDs included, these were dropped but seemingly the commitment to a high quality transfer from the tapes was maintained.

The packaging is both good and bad. On the plus side, the CDs are in glossy gatefolds with coloured inner sleeves, a touch of luxury that bring out the glamour of Roxy Music.

On the minus side, this set is really sparse in terms of information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sound, missing information 12 Aug 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
In terms of sound quality, these 'flat' remasters walk all over the last round of Roxy reissues - the sound is open, full, and detailed, and I'm pretty sure these will be my go-to discs in future. I'm a little disappointed that hi-res versions weren't included as originally planned, but I suspect the differences would be minimal for most listeners, and their presence would have jacked up the price.

I'm a little surprised that the package is so spartan. The box looks cool - it's glossy black, very classy, and takes its design cues from the 1981 'First 7 Albums' LP set (though I wish they had followed that packaging more closely, as it was beautiful). The albums within are glossy repros of the original album art, and the discs originally released as gatefolds include all the art found in the original LPs. It's the missing art and info that bugs me. Why blank cardboard sleeves on all discs? Some inner sleeves had originally included lyrics and credits; none of that is included here. A booklet including all that information would have been appreciated. And a semi-minor quibble - why no title information on the spine of the box? It's a large, shiny black expanse of nothing. Most people might not care, but the anal-retentive in me sees this as a major design screw-up.

Having said all that, the sound of the individual discs is what counts, and the sound is wonderful. I can't complain about the price either: For what I got - improved audio and attractive packaging (given its limitations), this is a great deal.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fine sounding studio Roxy Music set 7 Aug 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
The first thing anyone getting this set has to get over this is it's not the ultimate set with HD audio on dvds and a coffee table book thrown in that when announced we all expected and to be fair, would have cost us considerably more than the set we ultimately got.
It is regrettable a background capsule booklet wasn't included which is the only reason I'd dock a star for this product because it would of helped to set the context of each album (and the singles) release for the casual fan but the packaging is otherwise of a high standard with thick card sleeves and a paper inner to protect the disc (Mylar sleeves if you need them can be had from SoundSource) and on the last five albums the artwork for the centrefold is that from originally issued in the cd booklet. The card looks durable so shouldn't suffer damage in regular use with a bit of care. The box is sturdy (yay!) and functional allowing you to slide out the core to retrieve an album for playing when it is on your shelf.
The mastering for this set is different than the 1999 HDCD discs which are still available new, preserving far the better the difference between the quieter and louder passages so when you listen to a track like Street Life, it doesn't tire your ear and you can tell the difference between tracks with more softer passages and those that don't (If you detested the 'Loudness wars' you'll like this). Comparing with the older pre 1999 EG discs I'd say the resolution is higher aided no doubt by the newer analogue to digital converters with cleaner sounding percussion sounding open as this critical part of mastering equipment has improved in over 30 years when the very first Roxy Music cds came out.
