An excellent dissection of this most controversial motor car, 27 Mar 2000

This review is from: Rover SD1: The Complete Story (Crowood AutoClassics) (Hardcover)
Karen Pender's "Rover SD1 - The Complete Story" provides an amazingly comprehensive study of British Leyland's most controversial car. From its conceptual beginnings in 1969, embryonic development throughout the early 1970s, production in the latter half of that decade, ongoing improvements throughout the 1980s and eventual (some say premature) replacement by the Rover 800 - and not forgetting, of course, the cost-cutting, managerial incompetence and shopfloor apathy that blighted British Leyland during its troubled history - this book has the lot! There are also some fascinating photographs showing early prototypes and experimental variations. The amount of research that has gone into this book is astounding.
Each of the many model variants are well covered including the rare Turbo Diesel, tarmac-terrorising Vitesse and various export models. Details on trim and functional specifications are fully documented, too.
There is a wealth of technical mechanical details for the ardent SD1 fans, though it's easy enough to skip these sections if desired.
Although clearly an SD1 fanatic, Pender is aware of the car's major inherent faults though I felt these could have been covered in more detail.
Perhaps the book's only fault is that, although entirely readable, Pender's prose is rather amateurish in places - Crowood Publishing need to get themselves a better editor!
Overall, though, a truly excellent achievement and an unparalleled tome of information that will easily satisfy both SD1 diehards and the merely curious!

An enjoyable, clear, interesting and comprehensive book, 23 April 2001

If (like me) you are an SD1 fan, then you must buy this book. It gives details of the background and history of the SD1 development as well as technical data and nice colour photographs. The appendix also has useful statistics about performance and production figures as well as a handy VIN decoder.

Great background and reference for SD1 fans, 25 May 2008
This review is from: Rover SD1: The Complete Story (Crowood AutoClassics) (Hardcover)
I was very pleased with this book. There aren't that many books around that are specific to the SD1, and Karen Pender has done a great job. I enjoyed reading about the development, the people behind the car's design, and the various chapters covering each model. You also get a sense of the turmoil going on within the Leyland empire throughout the car's life, and how this affected so many aspects of the SD1's execution. There's even separate chapters covering motorsport, police spec and overseas market cars.
If I had one criticism it would be the relatively small number of colour photos. The colour plates are grouped together in an 8 page section near the middle of the book, so you don't get colour photos that relate to the section of the book you're reading. Elsewhere however, the illustrations are good and well placed.
In summary you get an excellent hardback book that covers the Rover SD1 story very thoroughly. If you love SD1s, you'll enjoy this book.
