Review

'Potentially daunting, this complex subject is made a snap by clever arrangements for entries: five different types, from mini-essay to thumbnail definition, all cross-indexed. The helpful navigational aids include coded typeface, a thematically-organized reader's guide, and an excellent comprehensive index. Thorough, accessible, and remarkably free of obfuscating language. Highly recommended.'– Choice

'It is the single volume I would advise my students and other budding narratologists to purchase so as to have it constantly at hand for quick consultation...With its more than 700 tightly packed pages, close to 450 entries by 200 international experts on narrative-theoretical topics, plus an 80-page index, the Encyclopedia is well worth the investment.' - Pekka Tammi, Language and Literature 16:4 (2007)

Product Description

As a comprehensive one-stop resource for students and researchers in the many disciplines drawing on narrative theory and analysis, the Encyclopedia promises to be a milestone in the development of the field.

As a student of narratology, I have found the "Routledge Encyclopedia of Narrative Studies" an extremely useful and up-to-date tool for assimilating concepts, gathering additional information and pursuing further reading. Its extensive entries are researched and written by dozens of contributors, including leading experts in the field (James Phelan, Ansgar Nunning, Brian McHale, Mieke Bal, Jan Baetens, Manfred Jahn, David Herman, Monika Fludernik and many more). They all supply excellent sources, as well as suggestions for further reading.
Moreover, readers are not only provided with a list of entries and a comprehensive index but also with a Reader's Guide - a list of organized by key concepts and terms ; approaches and disciplinary orientations; genres, media and regional forms. To further assist readers, long entries are denoted in bold, while italicized titles denote thumbnail definitions.
I highly recommend this encyclopedia as a handy and reliable tool both for students of literary studies and for advanced researchers in need of quick, well-informed prompts.
