Product Description

Review

‘This really is a brilliantly useful book … All in all, this is an outstanding reference work that can also be enjoyed as an unusual graphic history of the Second World War and its many political, economic and military dimensions.’ – Military Illustrated

'Martin Gilbert's The Routledge Atlas of the Second World War is a riveting collection of original and informative maps.’ The Observer

'Sir Martin Gilbert's Atlas of the Second World War is a work of extraordinary scholarship ... No university, library, historian – or anyone interested in World War II – will want to be without it.'Henry Kissinger

Product Description

In The Routledge Atlas of the Second World War, Martin Gilbert graphically charts the war’s political, military, economic and social history through 257 illuminating maps. The atlas covers all the major events from the German invasion of Poland in September 1939 to the defeat of Japan in August 1945.

Focusing on the human – and inhuman – aspects of the war, The Routledge Atlas of the Second World War includes examination of:

  • military, naval and air campaigns on all the war fronts
  • the war on land, at sea and in the air
  • the economic and social aspects of the war
  • the global nature of the war, in armed combat and in suffering
  • the impact of the war on civilians, both under occupation, and as deportees and refugees
  • the aftermath of the war: post-war political and national boundaries; war graves; and the human cost of the war on every continent.

This paperback edition includes several updates to existing maps, as well as ten new maps, specially drawn for this edition. The new maps include examinations of Japanese- American and African- American soldiers serving with the United States Army, British women special agents, Belgium at War, and the German occupation of the Channel Islands.

Format:Paperback
This atlas has one of the greatest collection of maps i have ever seen about World War II. There are not only maps about the most famous operations like Normandy, Operation Barbarossa and Invasion of France, but there are also references to some less known facts like PoW camps, Australia at War, plans of Operation Downfall.
All maps are furnished with a brief but concise description which sums up very well the most important data u need to know about the events or operations represented graphically.
The new Paperback edition has 10 more maps than the Hardcover 1° edition and they are all very good.
To sum up if you are a WWII enthusiast this is a book u must buy because it's an excellent atlas to consult while you are reading a WWII related book.

An excellent atlas 3 April 2009
Format:Hardcover
Those readers familiar with Martin Gilberts work will recognise another great addition to his range of historical atlas's e.g. Jewish History atlas, British History, Holocaust, Russian History, Arab-Israeli history, First World War and American History. Also his great historic works; First World War and Second World War.

This atlas is a great partner to his Second World War work covering every major battle, campaign and invasion that occurred during this terrible conflict. The maps and diagrams are always very clear and useful and help to illustrate some very complex situations that occurred.

I would recommend this to anyone interested in the Second World War and military history.

an atlas or a chart 11 Mar 2009
Format:Hardcover
this Atlas is just an assemblence of facts on an outline of the country
or countries involved , it is of some interest to the military historian
if you want lots of facts in one volume, to a goegraphy student these are
poor . even poorer was my decision to buy one
