The programs can help in your studies but are limited as you have only fixed labs. The labs bare no correlation to the CCNA book by the same author which is a pity. Still The authors CCNA book come with even less labs to use to understand. So you are force to buy additional CCNA practical labs which makes you poor but the publishers rich.

An Essential Learning Tool 6 Feb. 2014
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD-ROM
A few of these labs are included with Wendell Odom's CCENT/CCNA ICND1 100-101 text. Those are a great way to get some "hands-on" experience with IOS. Then I found out there was a HUGE compilation of them in this one package, so I bought it immediately. I have access to some real IOS equipment at my job, but the engineer isn't going to let me near the production stuff (our real Cisco system) until I've demonstrated some competence, first. I'm almost there. Plus, I can't break this stuff or knock anybody offline, no matter how hard I try.

The labs are separated into ICND1 and ICND2 (books 1 & 2 of the CCNA series). You can sort them by topic, too. There are a bunch of labs for the CCENT book and a bunch more for the second book. The labs are critical because unless you have a photographic memory, the only way to remember the commands is to use them repetitively.

You can run the labs over and over, and that's what I'm doing to remember all those infernal commands, LOL. Also, you can just play around in the simulator, it's wide open for whatever you want to do inside the given lab setup. The system is recording most of what I do in the labs, which makes this interesting in an instructor-led environment, too.

The labs start out as short introductions to the chapter topics, they call them Skill Builders. The steps guide you, telling you exactly what to do. Later, configuration and troubleshooting labs tell you what needs done, but expect you to come up with the commands yourself. Help is available when you get stuck, and the goal is to be able to perform the tasks without it. If you can't perform the task without help, wait a day or two then go back and do the lab all over again. Repeat until you know the commands. It's a solid design.

The software works great, I've had no problems with it.

A couple comparisons: Lammle's labs are fine. He doesn't check your steps like this does, you can't see the topology while labbing, and this Sim has a LOT more labs. The Cisco Learning Labs are good too, but time-limited (you pay for 90 days access or something like that), and you can only use them online. I can use this forever, anywhere.

So, if you like the free labs included with Wendell Odom's CCENT/CCNA books, you'll love this simulator. I'm glad I bought it.

Grading can be a two-edged sword 9 Jun. 2014
By D. Stuart - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD-ROM Verified Purchase
After using Packet Tracer in class, this simulator was quite different. I'm told that on the real test it's the results you get graded for, not (so much) how you got there. But I still find this simulator's ability to grade you useful: it tells you not only if you used the 'correct' steps to get there, but also can tell you about which things you did that were unnecessary. For me, that can help clarify what I've done 'wrong.' [Much of the time I already realize that I was going the wrong direction, but not always.]
On the other hand, it's grading made me want to rerun the lab without grading it - negating the usefulness. Also, much of the time I want to play around with things just to learn and to get more comfortable. Fortunately, you choose when to let it grade you.
I don't know why certain commands are unavailable (or changed). For instance, starting at the beginning (Chap 8), I just automatically assumed I would do vty 0 15. It wouldn't let me. By using the Tab and ? I finally realized they'll only let you do vty 0 4. So some options you'd expect are not available.
Overall I really like it.

GET THIS IF YOU WANT TO GET HIRED!!!! 15 Aug. 2014
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com

Great ways to get your feet wet with CCNA and CCNP. Be advised that there is a CCENT ICND1 100-101 version as well. But don' buy both, just get the 200-120. The later contains both the advance stuffs plus everything from 100-101 labs. So learn from my mistakes. This lab is really good because the authors teach you how to think like a network engineer as you follow each steps. Worth every pennies. Thank Wendell and Sean for this well thought out simulator. I'm hungry for more labs. So if the authors are reading this, please produce another one for CCNP or CCIE. I really like the way you two put this product together.

Critical to studying for the Cisco CCNA Routing and Switching Exam 8 Feb. 2014
By Neil John - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD-ROM
As part of a three part approach to studying for the Cisco CCNA Routing and Switching 200-120 Exam I have found the Network Simulator Software extremely useful (The other two parts being the Cisco Course Book and the Cisco Video Course).
Not only does it guide you through, step by step, how to configure every Cisco IOS topic covered in the corresponding Cisco CCNA course book but it provides the platform that enables you to practice these configuration tasks as often and you need to.
Personally, I have found that the Network Simulator Software is a great way to consolidate the concepts and tasks taught in both the Cisco course book and the Cisco Video Course.
