Product Description

CD Description

Whilst it s undeniable that Rockabilly s spiritual home lay in the South, it s perhaps a little simplistic to suggest it was born merely of the fusion of the white Country music and black R&B that predominated there. Other influences, both musical and geographical, helped to shape the sound that would eventually give rise to Rock n Roll. From the backwoods of Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia to the dusty plains of Oklahoma and Texas, from the swamplands of Louisiana to the bustling juke joints of Illinois and Michigan, traditional Bluegrass, Hillbilly, Western Swing, Gospel, Blues and Cajun would all play their part in creating a rich musical melting pot as diverse as the country and its people.

About the Artist

This compilation attempts to highlight some of those influences and includes many of the original versions of songs later adapted by barnstorming rockers such as Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Wanda Jackson. Early recordings by Country legends such as Hank Williams, Jimmy Revard, Bob Wills and the Delmore Brothers, and by Blues exponents Arthur Gunter, Big Mama Thornton and Piano Red, indicate that the roots and branches of Rockabilly grew in many directions and stretch back further than one might think. Also featured are lesser-heard names such as Jimmy Selph, Gene Henslee and Mack Davis whose recordings showcase Rockabilly at its downhome best. Spanning more than twenty years, this is an exciting musical odyssey that draws together key recordings from all points on the compass and from across the racial divide essential listening for all fans of the Rockabilly genre and its origins. Booklet houses informative liner notes, photos and memorabilia.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something to suit all tastes & types of Rockabilly?, 3 Nov 2009
By
Graham Richards (Miélan, South of France) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Routes of Rockabilly (Audio CD)
Full marks to whoever put this nifty little package together. Depending on how far you go into the routes of Rockabilly there is something here for everyone and all the different variations of this wonderful music are covered. There is prime blues that then travels through hillbilly, western swing, rhythm & blues, country & western with the odd helping of traditional rock & roll thrown in.

Personally I always love to hear Tennessee Ernie Ford as he could cope with a variety of styles. Also featured and to the fore is the late great Hank Williams and one of the many people he inspired, ( and yes he is my personal favourite) Jerry Lee Lewis this time branching over into the country & western field. Enough said really the artists and the tracks say it all. This is another car CD which will be played on those long car journies that we make here in France.

For any of your friends/family who might be interested in this type of music, well this is an excellent place to start them off.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Well 'ard" rocking music, 16 Jan 2011
By
This review is from: Routes of Rockabilly (Audio CD)
I wish reviewers would get there facts right. Graham Richards says Jerry Lee "branched over" into c and w music. WRONG! He always was a c and w singer who then sang rockabilly and r and r. A great compilation, with lots of excellent tracks and a great price too. Sod the neighbours, wind up the volume and ROCK!!!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rocky and Billy Music, 22 Mar 2010
By George B. Feist "DukeoftheDiscs" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Routes of Rockabilly (Audio CD)
Rocky and Billy music is how Johnny Burnettes son described how he said tongue in cheek is parents named the genre...after Johnny and Dorseys sons... People would come into the place they were playing and see the sons...Rocky and Billy and say..."play some of that Rocky and Billy" music......I love rockabilly no matter the legend or the truth and this cd has been put together with some of the best and first versions of classic songs. Great compilation. While I had alot of the songs, I had to have the packet and loved the liner note card too. If you are starting out diggin this kind of music this is the place to start..ROCK ON...Duke
