First screened in the early 1990s, the childrens series Round The Twist soon became a much-loved, must-see show for all the family. Adapted from the imaginative stories of Paul Jennings, Round The Twist became renowned for it s outlandish mysteries and the outrageous, slapstick comedy adventures of the seemingly wacky Twist family This complete first series tells the tale, over 13 episodes, of Tony Twist, (the long suffering Dad), and his 3 children, 14 year old twins Pete and Linda, and 8 year old Bronson, who all move into an old lighthouse on the rugged Australian coast. Of course the lighthouse is haunted, but that is only the start of this family s adventures. Pete discovers the special powers of his magic underpants - after drying them in the family microwave - while Bronson, after being told that babies come from unguarded cabbage patches, actually finds one there. And chaos reigns after a bolt of lightening hits the family s video remote control and starts to actually Pause, Rewind and Fast- Forward people! It can only be... ROUND THE TWIST EXTRAS INCLUDE Series 1 Episode Synopsis, Twist Shoots - How The Series Was Made, Author Paul Jennings Biography, Exclusive Nostalgia Page - What was Hot In 1990 and a Special Sing-A-Long Theme Tune
I purchased this DVD with slight apprehension that I would be disappointed - children's shows often tend to lose their magic when watched after growing up.
There was no need to worry. These stories captured the imagination of a certain generation back in the early 1990s and I'm sure they will continue to do so. 'Round the Twist' is a lesson in how to make children's television. Imaginative, darkly humorous and compelling. I sat down intending to watch one episode at a time and save the rest for later, but couldn't turn it off until I'd watched the whole thing. Fantastic storylines, great characters. This is The X-files for kids. Don't let them watch with the lights out!
And the best news is, I know for a fact that series 2 is even better, and it's coming out very soon.
I was about 13 when I first saw Round The Twist on the Beeb, and I loved it from the start. It's got a great whacky sense of humour and great leads. The theme music is dead catchy too!(me and my friends would sing it all the time!) and it hasn't aged a bit. Second series isn't half as good as the original cast just can't be beaten.
The catchy theme tune sets the ball rolling -then you're off - just a slight suspension of belief needed... We went to Australia a while back and my daughters read the books this series is based on- and they loved them. So they were thrilled when they realised this programme was the books on film. The ideas are weird , whacky and a bit surreal but well worth a look. Even as an adult I was intrigued. Enjoy!
