5.0 out of 5 stars Radio comedy at its finest, 11 July 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: "Round the Horne", The Collector's Edition: Series 1, March 1965-June 1965 (Audio CD)
Round the Horne was one of the great radio shows. This CD box set contains all 16 episodes from the first series, including 3 previously lost episodes.

Though it's very much part of the swinging sixties, the humour hasn't dated in the same way as so many other old radio shows. This is mainly due to the scripts of Barry Took and Marty Feldman which have more gloriously bad puns per minute than you'd think possible. These scripts play to the strengths of the players, particularly Kenneth Williams whose manic camp was never better used.

For the few who don't know, Round the Horne is a sketch show. The characters are memorable, particularly Julian and Sandy getting away with more gay innuendo than you'd think possible.

This is the standard by which British comedy is judged.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Collection And Painfully Funny Too!, 29 Aug 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: "Round the Horne", The Collector's Edition: Series 1, March 1965-June 1965 (Audio CD)
This boxset of Round The Horne Series One is wonderfully packaged, pink in colour, and includes a very good biography type booklet of the show. The episodes are much, much clearer than the previously issued cassettes and all sound crystal clear. Kenneth Williams really used these shows to go full reign with his funny voices and characters and it is very very funny!

All the characters in the shows are very rude sounding and the jokes are stuffed with innuendo and sharp wit.

The storylines are some of the funniest I've heard too and the CD set is guranteed to make you laugh with joy, well worth the money and great when life is stressful and you need some good laughter relief.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost surreal, 21 Aug 2003

Every episode from the first series in one box. Who could ask for better?
Well in truth the later series do hit the buttons more frequently, and certainly the humour gets increasingly surreal as the writers confidence increases. The first episodes have a strong sense of the team coming to terms with just what it is they have got, with a strong impression that they are sometimes feeling the way.
Half way through and they are truly on full throttle - where they stayed until Horne's death.
I have to give only four stars simply because RTH can only be measured against itself - compared to anything else it should have six (at least). Its just that the later shows have an edge.
Horne was a genius straight/link man and the rest were true comic stars, with the sense of timing that lifts humour from chuckle to guffaw. Just listen to the audience, they must still ache.
The show has stood the test of time remarkably well, the only give away being the (now) rather cheesy singing by the Frazer-Hayes Four - but only one song per show so who cares.
