Format:Paperback
Shute gives us yet another inspiring tale filled with hope for humanity. Told by a pilot in the post-war period it charts his experiences through the Middle and Far East and the people who touch his life. Shute's characters, as ever, are beautifully drawn and wholly believable and face life with a dignity missing from many authors' work. As we are shown glimpses of the nature of faith, redemption, and love against the unlikely background of aeroplane engineering we cannot fail to be moved.
One of the strongest titles from the master-storyteller it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up with sheer emotion.

Having read several of Nevil Shutes books, and finding pleasure in many of them, this is the one that I keep coming back to. In my opinion, it's his best, with "A town like Alice" coming second.
The story takes you through the mid-east and south Asia, bringing up subjects like work ethics, religion and tolerance between ethnic groups.
Even though a lot has changed in the world as compared to when the book was written, it is still a book to read, and to ponder on.

Difficult to know whether to review the book, or the Kindle version! So it is 5 stars for the book but would be 3 stars for this version. £6.40 is, IMHO, too much for a book written by an author who has been dead for 50 years and it has text to speech disabled which, bearing in mind the likely age of readers, is just dumb. Let's hope the money is at least going to Mr Norway's family and not just greedy publishers!
As to the book it is the usual wonderfully well told Nevil Shute story, amusing particularly that it deals with what to Nevil Norway the aircraft engineer, designer and aviation company owner must have been the perfect religion!
Full of what today would be very non PC terms and views it very much reflects the society (and Britain's place in it) of the time and ideas that, at that time, would have been very radical i.e. the very idea that asian engineers could be just as good as Brits and even the possibility that an Englishman might marry a girl of mixed race. Despite that it has messages that are every bit as relevent today - particularly that of different religions having common ground instead of cause for hatred.
"I doubt anyone will be reading my books in 50 years" Nevil Shute once said. I'm very glad to prove him completely wrong on that one point!

All Religions are NOT the same.
It's obvious that Nevil Shute wrote with the impressions of his travels, and as in his other books some of those impresions come through very strongly. THis book is about Asia. Read more

Excellent book
I read this book about 15 years ago, and was immediately impressed, I still think of it today, and rate it amongst the best Novels I have ever read.
