Arrived in robust cardboard 'case' and it took about 5 seconds to fit the head to the shaft (which has stayed on just fine). Absolutely perfect for the job - uprooted a couple of big tree roots and been able to hack away at some packed earth and rocks. Seems pretty strong too: I've had my whole body weight dangling off this with no effects to either the shaft/handle or the mattock head.
Superb value for money and considerably better quality than comparably priced 'own brands' I've seen in certain DUY chains.

This pick axe is fantastic !Perfect for landscaping and gardening hard work like stomping out, cutting roots or even getting a rid of the big grass with the flat blade on the back. The pick is great for moving stones.
The fiber glass handle is light, so less effort. At first sight the handle looks long but is perfect for giving a good swing. In few words, a very efficient tool, precious in any garden shed. I could'nt work without now :)

I have used this tool to remove the stumps and roots of some large bushes and small trees that had been cut down, in order to prevent the growth of new shoots. I chose a pick mattock, rather than a grubbing mattock (with an axe-like blade on one side), because I thought it would be useful to have the pick for levering out stubborn roots. I already have a pick axe but in some situations its blades are too long and do not provide the required leverage without over-stressing the handle (I recently broke a wooden handle doing this). I found this pick mattock to be up to the job and have confidence in the strength of the head and the fibreglass handle. Before using it, I fixed the head on very firmly by thumping the end of the shaft down on a block of wood which was placed on a concrete pathway.

Part of me would have liked a traditional wooden handle but I decided on the yellow fibreglass one having broken a spade handle last year. The fibreglass handle works really well and is comfortable to hold and slide the hands up and down. The business ends are sharp. The pick breakup soil well and the mattock cuts through the roots well (though I could do with an electronic guiding system as my aim is hopeless!). The handle only worked loose when I used the tool in a way that would not be recommended. In normal use I can't see why it would.

and chopped through loads of roots along the way. It did the job perfectly.

The handle comfortable and its easy to swing. Not much to say really, i'd buy another but this comes with a lifetime guarantee so maybe I won't!

I was quoted £125 to stump grind five laurel tree stumps. I made an attempt with fork and spade - waste of time. Bought this Roughneck Pick Mattock - it arrived in two days - about 8 hours later the job is done. Excellent tool. If you are digging in stony ground safety goggles or your oldest pair of glasses strongly recommended. It is true the head works loose - I am no mattock expert but that seems to be part of the design and works fine as long as you check before each swing.

Make sure you secure the plastic tie at the working end of the tool. Without it the heavy metal head slides down the shaft and can cause a nasty injury.
Tool is great for lifting slabs, digging out roots etc
