Biography

Describing herself simply as a "modern English musician" Eliza Carthy, is only now beginning to reach the height of her musical powers. During a 20-year journey/career she has become one of the most dazzling and recognised folk musicians of a generation. She has revitalised and made folk music relevant to new audiences and has captured the most hardened of dissenters with canny, charismatic and… Read more in Amazon's Eliza Carthy Store

Product Description

Album Description

Showcasing the supreme voice and fiddle of probably the biggest star that has emerged out of the folk scene in the last decade, Rough Music puts the well-connected Eliza Carthy--her parents are Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson--on the map as a staggering talent in her own right.

CD Description

Probably the biggest star that has emerged from the Folk Scene in the last decade, Eliza Carthy is still on her way up. Her last album, ANGLICANA (Topic TSCD539), sold in excess of 20,000 in the UK alone and won her an unprecedented three awards at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards (Album Of The Year, Singer Of The Year and Best Traditional Track). She is also the only folk based artist to garner two Mercury Music Prize nominations. She is not just one of the most highly rated singers and musicians of her generation, but has emerged as a Radio and TV presenter as well and has the highest media profile of anybody on the folk scene. ROUGH MUSIC is a step on from what she has done before and is a powerful, vital, multi-layered album full of dark rhythms in her vision of English traditional music. Her backing band The Rat Catchers features her long time collaborator, Ben Ivitsky, and two of the fastest rising stars on the folk scene, Jon Boden and John Spiers, themselves double winners in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Eliza Carthy & The Rat Catchers are headlining a major 23 date tour in advance of the album release. Expect extensive and highly visible coverage in all the quality general press as well as reviews and articles in all the music press. Tracks: Turpin Hero / King James Version / Cobblers Hornpipe / Gallant Hussar / Upside Down Set / Mohair / The Unfortunate Lass / Scan Tester’s Country Step Dance, Lemmy Brazil’s No 2 / Maid On The Shore / Mr McCusker And Mr McGoldrick’s English Choice / Tom Brown.

Striking through it's seemingly total absence of percussion throughout, rough music is a masterpiece in modern English Folk.
It seems Eliza and her fellow musicians 'the ratcatchers' are returning to a more traditional sound with this latest album, certainly when compared to the critically acclaimed if slightly more commercial preceding album, 'Anglicana'.
This said, it is as with all of Eliza Carthy's previous albums, hugely accessable for a wider (and dare I say it, younger?!)audience who are unaccustomed to English Folk music.
I love it. I'm sure you will to!

Eliza does it again 16 Jun 2005
Format:Audio CD
Once again Eliza brilliantly interprets traditional British folk music infusing it with her own particular magic. Every track is a gem. She is a real breath of fresh air in an industry that is stale with shallow 2 dimensional offerings from semi talented individuals. Eliza plays fiddle as well as singing and is ably backed by the rat catchers who provide a rich tapestry against which her music can be displayed. Buy it for a real alternative - you won't regret it.

Could this girl fail in folk music given her Parents? Well she could have if she just became a clone of them instead she chose to take a different route and to freshen up folk music with a more contemporary feel. This is one of my favourite folk music albums and a welcome break from manufactured musicians all too prevalent nowadays.

This is a very enjoyable album of mainly traditional folk tunes and well worth adding to any collection.
