A Meditation on John Mellencamp’s Life, Death, Love and Freedom
A few years ago, the Hungarian ambassador to the United States asked me to moderate a panel discussion at the embassy on “Rock & Roll as a Force for Freedom on Both Sides of the Iron Curtain.” The panel was to consist of the ambassador (András Simonyi), Tommy Ramone and me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some Mellencamp favourites revisited and reworked 13 July 2001
Format:Audio CD
A more "informal" feeling album, Rough Harvest revisits some Mellencamp classics, and what makes this such a good album is that you can hear the band really enjoying themselves, which comes across in the performances, which are all excellent. Not one bad track on the whole album, and one that's worth owning even if you already have many of the tracks on other albums - these aren't reworkings just for the sake of it...- not that all the tracks are new versions of old tracks. There are a number of excellent tracks unavailable elsewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars No overproduction here 10 July 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This album of reworked versions of (mostly) already and issued tracks has a fresh, live feel about it. A bunch of good songs, not a reworking of 'greatest hits' at all. Sung and played with feeling. Great fiddle playing. Quite invigorating, really. Has been overlooked, and it shouldn't be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rough Harvest - nothing rough about it 8 Feb 2007
Format:Audio CD
I came across John Mellencamp (I had heard Jack and Diane) by accident and what have I missed? I now have his entire catalogue and thought it was all brilliant - until this album. If you only ever buy one JCM album this HAS to be it. Enough said

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Crop: PAID and DELIVERED 14 May 2013
By G. K.
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This album is a collection of four covers and 9 alternate arrangements of John Mellencamp's favourite tracks, some are acoustic. 11 tracks out of 13 were recorded in 1997. I like this CD, more than I thought I would.
On this album, my favourite is the alternative version of `The Full Catastrophe' ***, in 1996 this song was good but the sound effects such as distortion and backing vocals, filled the space a bit too much and hid the words. Three years later, the form matches the contents: a guy tells his life story and frankly he's quite direct, so no need to get all the violins out. I also much prefer `Key West Intermezzo (I Saw You First)' **(*) in this new up-close version. The 1996 version was trying to be trendy with a lot of percussion and not always sounding very natural. I never paid much attention to the lyrics until I heard the Rough Harvest version. Now we have a lovely song, very softly sung, about two guys and one girl (great violin accompaniment). `Human Wheels' **(*) benefits also greatly from being rid of the original production of 1993: no voice effect, no repetitive drumming and string picking; what we get here is a warm ballad and (good) guitar song. I can see why JM wanted to re-record it. Personally, I would not have added violins and backing vocals (they get irritating towards the end), I would have had it all bare. The lyrics of course are the same and I find them to be the most obscure of his career [comment added, with origins of the words]. `When Jesus Left Birmingham' ** is better here too: the 1993 single dragged on a bit, there were lots of gaps between the verses and many voices competing: I was never sure what kind of mood JM was trying to set. The new version is in fact faster and shorter and it gets to the heart of it; lots and lots of violin.
