Rough Guide Scandinavia,

This review is from: The Rough Guide to Scandinavia (Paperback)
A comprehensive guide for the visitor to Scandinavia, with much helpful advice. Rather let down, as with all Rough Guides by inadequacy of town maps, which sometimes omit items discussed in text, and fail to include bus/tram routes and service numbers

Useful enough guide,
By Studentspender (UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Rough Guide to Scandinavia (Paperback)
Haven't left Britain yet, but the book has helped me plan parts of my trip. The city maps are annoying in that they don't have enough detail and don't always list things I'm looking for, but I'm sure they'd be okay for finding your way to and from a train station. I usually get Lonely Planet books but bought this as it seemed a better guide. I don't know if that's true or not. It covers the travel & sightseeing basics (and I'm reading 'Fishing in utopia' for all the things it doesn't tell you!).

A Great Guide for All Budgets -- Beautifully & Practically Done,
By RA Meeks "ra meeks" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Rough Guide to Scandinavia (Paperback)
This book makes learning about Scandinavia, as well as what to see and do once you're there, worth every penny. It's well organized and engaging in a way some travel books are not. The pictures and information are so user-friendly, and so helpful, you're ready to pack your bags and leave for the airport. The maps are clear (both the regional maps and the city maps) and vibrant, as are the photos. If you're interested in the history of Scandinavia (and/or its disparate countries: Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland), there is plenty of information about a part of the world whose history is not as homogenous as you might think. This isn't the only travel book about Scandinavia, but it sure seems to be one of the better ones. It's a little more expensive for a paperback but well worth it for all you get. As of this writing, the 8th edition of the book came out in July 2009, so the information is still relatively current. And the fact that there have been 8 editions means they've both had a chance to get it right as well as find out what readers think. Highly recommended. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful:

Not much History,
By D. Larson - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Rough Guide to Scandinavia (Paperback)
I bought the book thinking that there was quite a bit of history. I was not very interested in "why to do" info since we were going to be on a tour. The history is minimal (51 pages), whereas the book is mostly (687 pages) "what to do", "books to read" and language tips. Also, the maps in the book were not nearly as good as another tour info book we looked at while on the trip.
