The Rough Guide to Romania is the definitive handbook on one of Europe's most fascinating, scenic and enigmatic countries. The full-colour introduction highlights all the unmissable sights from the wilds of the Carpathian mountains to the marvellous Delta wetlands, as well as referencing the country's many unique festivals. Two full-colour sections describe the many outdoor activities on offer - from mountain hikes and skiing, to bear and wolf tracking - as well as the country's extraordinary religious architecture. This comprehensive guide reviews all the top hotel and restaurant options for every taste and budget, and includes informed background on Romania's history, wildlife, literature, music and, of course, Dracula. Accurate maps and comprehensive practical information help you get under the skin of Romania, whilst stunning photography makes this your ultimate travelling companion.

Very useful. 17 Sep 2009

An excellent guide. Good city plans and useful descriptions of accomodation and restaurants.

I travelled with a friend, and between us we had the Rough Guide and Loneley Planet. No comparison - by the end of our holiday we had just stopped using the Lonely Planet - a much inferior guide. Inaccurate as well.

I browsed this book, and I totally agree with the previous comment by "A Customer". I'd even add that they mention The Szekey Land! That does not exist in any Romanian official document as a Romanian region. That is a region which some hungarian *extremists* claim to be Hungarian and that it should be independent and autonomous! It's a shame because the Rough Guides are usually popular travel guides. The authors who wrote this one though, either got the information from the wrong sources, or are eager for controversies. If you buy this, you visit Romania or learn about Romania from it, you risk to involuntarily insult any Romanian you might talk to.

The tired old reviews complaining that the Rough Guide to Romania talks only about tired old hotels should be removed - the book has been updated and does give a fair picture of Romania today. I suspect the references to Hungarian culture are so noticeable because minority cultures are of particular interest to foreign visitors - of course the majority culture is covered and appreciated, but why bother saying 'this is a typically Romanian town' all the time??

Good, but some things are incorrect
The guide was quite complete. Even on smaller towns there was information written. Sometimes we would have wished more information on some of the bigger cities like Brasov and... Read more

A thorough guide book.
A thorough guide book, albeit a bit dry. More photos and more help with route planning would enhance it.

Dependable detail
As usual, the fifth edition of this guide published in June 2008 proves itself to be above others in the quality and detail of information provided for the traveller. Read more

Trip to Dracula country
A well laid out book which offers all the information you could ask for about Romania. High accessible and offers much more than just Dracula!

What an adventure!
I found this book extremely useful during my two week tour of Romania via car. However the most frustrating thing was the difficulty in locating the original 'Dracula castle'. Read more
