I enjoyed this book immensely. Dr Jarrett has managed to condense an enormous amount of information into an engaging volume which serves as a brilliant introduction to the subject. True to the Rough Guide ethic, there is absolutely no waffle or jargon - just plain, incisive writing telling you exactly what you need to know.
This is as comprehensive a book on psychology as you could ever hope to fit into your coat pocket. All the expected bases are touched, from the history of Psychology to the famous names and essential experiments which shaped the field. Milgram, check. Freud, check. Intelligence. Social Psychology. The Dimensions of Personality. Mental Health. Brain Structure. There are definitions and illustrations galore, and also many box-outs with enlightening facts, useful psychological tips for everyday life, and even the odd amusing anecdote. Nice also to find welcome asides on the self-correcting principles of scientific study, the ethics of research and the potential minefields which psychologists must negotiate. As Dr Jarrett is at pains to point out, there's no such thing as a perfect science.
But what makes this book especially exciting for me is its cutting-edge take on the subject. The Rough Guide To Psychology reveals what psychology is like NOW, this very moment. The book is littered with modern research, new explanations for old conundrums, potential directions and discoveries that could hit the headlines tomorrow. Reading this book makes you want to dive in and participate. We know so much about the astounding way our minds work, but there is so much more to discover.
In short, I'm sure that anyone with a passing interest in the subject will find the Rough Guide To Psychology a stimulating and enjoyable read.
