Call me old fashioned, but I've always been one for using just a map for my travels, whether its abroad or still in the UK.
With a map, you can open it out and decide on your next days ride, looking out for the green routes etc.
I have always used Michelin folding maps, as they are always infomative, they tend to be up to date, and they fit in my tankbag on the bike, with a bit of a squeeze.
A couple of the downsides to a Michelin map was no gridlines, and if it got wet, it could get ruined quite easily.
The Rough guide map is made from plastic, which means its waterproof, pretty much tear-proof, and you can write on it with a permanent marker pen, and just use cheap hairspray to remove the pen marks when your done with them. The gridlines aren't as important, but with gridlines and a compass, you will always be able to find your way to a town or village should you ever get hopelessly lost.
By far the best paper/plastic maps on the market right now
