Pretty good 1 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
We went to Iceland with both this and the Lonely Planet guide. I would suggest that each book has information that the other doesn't.

Rough Guide was more clearly laid out with better/larger maps. Also it seemed more readable for background information about history, Sagas and interesting facts.

I think the Lonely Planet Guide had more information overall, it's index just seemed to have more.

It really depends what you're used to.

I bought this guide looking for an alternative to the Lonely Planet guide... A big mistake! This guide makes it so difficult to extract information out of easily and efficiently! They generally only suggest one option for any tours or activities when after further research there are quite a few different tour operators with very different prices. There is no mention of dog sledding in the book, or if there is i've been unable to find it as it's not listed in the index. There is some good information but the way they organize the information renders it useless. The information is worthless if you can't find it! This is true especially if you are used to the Lonely Plant style which is very straightforward. I would not recommend this guide to a friend and am very disappointed I wasted money on it.

A Well-Written Introduction to Iceland 5 Mar 2011
By SJ - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I just got this book to read for an upcoming trip to Iceland. I've not yet finished going through it, but I can already tell it was a good book to buy. It's well-written, very informative, and laid-out well with cross-references. I even read the Introduction! I particularly liked the Top 23 list of things to see. The writing does have a European bent because temperatures are given in Celsius, weights and measures are in meters and liters, and ISK (Iceland Kronor)comparisons are made to Euros and GBP. That's a little annoying - at the risk of sounding like a stereotypical US-centric reader - but easily remedied with online conversion sources. Also, the maps are small and difficult for me to read as anything more than a general reference. So, don't expect usable maps from this book. It's still worth getting and for supplementing an Iceland travel library.

Not Impressed 10 Mar 2011
By Tom Darling - Published on Amazon.com

I have long used Lonely Planet guides, but the recent USA guides were spotty in coverage and some of the reviews of Iceland and Ireland (our destinations) were not great. Rough Guides were recommended, so I took a chance. Reviews said they were soaking with details and almost too much information. While I like too much information, I found that it was scatter shot in its unevenness. Perhaps I am comparing it to Lonely Planet, and my head thinks in a Lonely Planet way, but I could not picture my trip to either Iceland (where I've been) or Ireland (which is new). I'm someone who needs to have an idea of what to expect before I go, and Rough Guide did not do that for me.

For the most part, I'm interested in the sites and not lodging or pubs or whatever. I also like a city laid out, and Lonely Planet guides do a good job with an overview before breaking each region down. I also appreciate the Lonely Planet sidebars on saving money by buying this or that pass, or local traditions and the like. Again, I may think in a Lonely Planet way.

I can picture these guides being very useful, and taking a ton of notes as I go. For everyone who is just winging it (roughing it!) the scatter shot presentation might work great. Having not been to Ireland before, I'm not confident enough to throw my lot in with Rough Guides. Having been to Iceland, this guide just confused me and left me less confident about going back.

I thoroughly believe everything you need to know is in this book to travel to Iceland. Please check out current exchange rates because they do change. Google and Yahoo both have great global currency exchange rates that are always precise. Prices may also vary due to the time of the year you decide to travel so make sure you call, email and plan ahead.
