This is a pre-trip guide for travellers planning their first trip to Latin America. The first section of the book gives individual profiles of all 21 Latin American countries, with a rundown of highlights and possible itineraries. 4.0 out of 5 stars Useful as your first book, 10 Jun 2003
This review is from: The Rough Guide First Time Latin America: A Rough Guide Special (Rough Guide Travel Guides) (Paperback)
It is pretty good if you have no idea which part of this interesting continent to go. It gives you a brief view of each country and important places to visit in each country. However, it does not give you fine details like the culture, transport, eating, etc. Once you finalise where to go, you may need to buy a separate guide book that give you these fine details for you to survive in the countries.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does exactly what it says on the tin..., 17 Feb 2009

I bought this guide whilst pondering which amazing trip through Latin America I wanted to travel; should it be Peru & the Inca trail or the Ruta Maya? The best thing about this book is that it gives you the relevant information that you need to make that kind of decision without you having to wade through an entire 10+ guidebooks that you won't have time for. The information is concise - when to go, what to try & see (or not to miss), festivals that may crop up during your visit, and a little history on the country; and yet you don't feel too bogged down or overloaded with facts & figures.
The first section has the usual start to a rough guide, with the top things not to miss & then all the countries of central & south america are discussed in alphabetical order - the same information presented for each country allowing direct comparison.
Don't be fooled - it is not a book I will take with me on my travels, but it has helped me make up my mind & plan what I want to see whilst I am there. Now I will get the specific books just needed for my trip rather than the entire south american continent! Recommended!

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh dear..., 31 Dec 2011
I ordered this book as we are thinking of doing two trips next year, one to South America, one to Central America but until we'd done some research we were not sure which countries and destinations to short list.
So I thought this book would be a good one to start with and was slightly drawn by its low price.
This book has been written so it provides very limited information so you have no choice but to go on and buy Central and South America books seperately and / or the individual country ones. The book has at max 4 pages on each country and consequently does not provide information for the most basic tourist sights never mind anymore, so it doesn't help you decide where to go. I was also surprised how thin the book considering it covers two continents and more than half of it is wasted on obvious generic traveller information (having the right vaccinations, wearing suncream etc etc).
As such I have returned it and bought the Central and South America LP books seperately, these arrived today are very thick and look much better content wise. I would recommend anyone else to do the same.
